Season Review
Dallas Cowboys 1996
The 1996 Dallas Cowboys entered the season carrying the immense weight of a defending Super Bowl champion, yet the cracks in the dynasty were becoming impossible to ignore under head coach Barry Switzer. Offseason arrivals like linebacker Fred Strickland and pass rusher Broderick Thomas were tasked with keeping the defensive unit elite, while rookies Kavika Pittman and Randall Godfrey aimed to inject youth into an aging roster. Despite an uneven campaign defined by off-field distractions and offensive regression, Dallas managed a 10-6 regular season record to capture the NFC East division title. However, the dominant aura of the early-1990s teams had visibly waned, setting up a grueling path through the postseason that ultimately signaled the beginning of the end for the Team of the 90s.
On offense, the legendary Triplets fought through a sluggish, uncharacteristic year as Dallas plummeted to 25th in points scored (17.9 ppg) and 24th in total yards. Pro Bowl quarterback Troy Aikman threw for 3,126 yards but managed just 12 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in his 15 starts. The ground game remained the focal point, with workhorse Emmitt Smith grinding out 1,204 rushing yards and 12 scores on 327 carries. Michael Irvin missed five games but still led the receiving corps with 962 yards, while the versatile Deion Sanders moonlit on offense to catch 36 passes for 475 yards. Despite these iconic names, the unit lacked its trademark explosiveness, failing to consistently replicate the dominance of their previous championship runs.
While the offense sputtered, the Dallas defense anchored the team by finishing 3rd in both points allowed (15.6 ppg) and total yards surrendered. The pass defense was particularly suffocating, ranking 2nd in the league and giving up a mere 10 passing touchdowns all year. Up front, defensive end Tony Tolbert spearheaded the pass rush with a stellar 12.0-sack campaign, earning a Pro Bowl nod. First-Team All-Pro safety Darren Woodson, who led the secondary with five interceptions, was an absolute force all year. Cornerback Kevin Smith also intercepted five passes, while Sanders added two picks of his own to form an elite defensive backfield. Strickland proved to be a vital free-agent addition, leading the entire roster with 103 combined tackles from his middle linebacker spot.
Texas-sized drama dictated the rhythm of the season, beginning with a dismal 22-6 opening day loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. Dallas steadied the ship with an impressive midseason stretch, highlighted by a gritty 20-17 overtime victory on the road against the rival San Francisco 49ers and a crucial 21-6 primetime win over the Green Bay Packers. A disastrous late-November matchup against the New York Giants saw Aikman throw two picks in a 6-20 defeat, but the Cowboys recovered to win three of their final four games. A closing 10-37 blowout loss to the Washington Redskins underscored the teamβs vulnerability heading into January.
In the playoffs, Dallas initially flashed its championship pedigree with a convincing 40-15 shellacking of the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round, powered by a massive 255-yard rushing performance. The ride came to a grinding halt the following week in the Divisional Round against the upstart Carolina Panthers, where a costly three-turnover day resulted in a season-ending 17-26 loss. Historically, the 1996 squad stands as the final chapter of the great Cowboys dynasty of the era. Though individual accolades remained high - with Woodson, Tolbert, Aikman, Larry Allen, Erik Williams and special teams ace Jim Schwantz making the Pro Bowl - the failure to reach the NFC Championship Game officially closed the curtain on an iconic era of football.
