Season Review
Dallas Cowboys 2006
The 2006 Dallas Cowboys season was a fascinating, soap-opera-style epic defined by immense expectations, a monumental quarterback transition, and a devastating finish. Entering the fourth year under legendary head coach Bill Parcells, the Cowboys made massive waves by signing mercurial superstar wide receiver Terrell Owens to bolster a roster primed for a deep playoff run. Free agent guard Kyle Kosier was brought in to shore up the interior offensive line, while young defensive end Jason Hatcher was drafted to add youth to the front seven. Dallas ultimately navigated a turbulent road to finish 9-7, securing second place in the fiercely competitive NFC East. While they ultimately clinched a wild-card berth, the campaign felt like a rollercoaster that ran out of track just as it reached peak momentum.
Offensively, the season completely shifted in Week 7 when Parcells benched veteran Drew Bledsoe in favor of an unheralded, former undrafted free agent named Tony Romo. Romo breathed immediate life into the unit, starting 10 games and throwing for 2,903 yards and 19 touchdowns with a stellar 65.3% completion rate, earning a Pro Bowl nod. The offense ranked fourth in the NFL in scoring with 425 points (26.6 ppg) and fifth in total yards. Romo maximized his perimeter weapons, feeding Terrell Owens for 1,180 yards and a league-leading 13 receiving touchdowns, while Terry Glenn added 1,047 yards of his own. On the ground, Julius Jones served as the primary workhorse with 1,084 rushing yards, but it was second-year back Marion Barber III who became the ultimate closer, hammering in 14 rushing touchdowns as a lethal goal-line weapon.
The defense presented a more complicated narrative, finishing a mediocre 20th in points allowed (21.9 ppg) but showcasing transcendent individual brilliance. The undisputed crown jewel of the unit was sophomore outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware, who blossomed into a terrifying edge rusher by racking up 11.5 sacks and forcing five fumbles, earning Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors. Up front, veteran nose tackle Jason Ferguson held the line, while linebacker Bradie James anchored the interior with a team-high 103 tackles. In the secondary, safety Roy Williams brought his trademark physical presence and ability to diagnose passing concepts to the tune of five interceptions and another Pro Bowl selection, flanked by cornerback Terence Newman. Despite these star pieces, the defense ranked a dismal 24th against the pass, often prone to catastrophic breakdowns that undermined their formidable pass rush.
The turning point of the campaign arrived on October 23 against the New York Giants, where Romo took over at halftime and never looked back. That sparked a scorching stretch where Dallas won five of six games, highlighted by a dominant 38-10 Thanksgiving day demolition of Tampa Bay and a signature 21-14 victory over the previously undefeated Indianapolis Colts. However, consistency remained elusive. A brutal December collapse saw the Cowboys drop three of their final four regular-season games, including an embarrassing 42-17 home blowout against the New Orleans Saints and a highly damaging Week 17 loss to a sub-.500 Detroit Lions team that cost them the division crown.
The legacy of this team will forever be encapsulated by a single, agonizing moment in the NFC Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks. Trailing 21-20 late in the fourth quarter, Romo led the team within field goal range, only to drop the snap on Martin Gramatica’s potential game-winning 19-yard attempt, being tackled just short of the end zone. It was a tragic end to a season that is remembered as the birth of the Romo era and the closing chapter of Parcells’ coaching career. Despite the heartbreaking exit, the individual achievements of Pro Bowl punter Mat McBriar and center Andre Gurode proved this roster was loaded with top-tier talent, leaving fans to wonder what might have been if not for a slick football in the Pacific Northwest.
