Season Review
Dallas Cowboys 2001
The 2001 Dallas Cowboys season marked a harsh dose of reality for a franchise completely unmoored from its nineties glory years. Entering the second year under head coach Dave Campo, expectations were deeply muted after franchise icon Troy Aikman retired in the offseason. Jerry Jones tried to bandage the wound by signing free agent Tony Banks, only to cut him during training camp. The resulting chaos yielded a 5-11 record, good for a last fifth-place finish in the NFC East. Dallas missed the postseason for the second consecutive year, looking less like 'Americas Team' and more like a franchise searching for a lost identity.
Offensively, the Cowboys struggled significantly, ranking 30th in points scored (15.4 ppg) and 29th in total yards. Dallas rolled out a turbulent carousel at quarterback led by rookie Quincy Carter, who threw for 1,072 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions in eight starts. When Carter was injured, Anthony Wright, Clint Stoerner, and Ryan Leaf all took turns under center, with Leaf going 0-3 in his final career starts. The saving grace was legendary running back Emmitt Smith, who gutted out 1,021 rushing yards. Wideouts Rocket Ismail and Joey Galloway added 834 and 699 receiving yards, but the offense lacked consistency.
Mike Zimmer's defense was the lone bright spot, remarkably ranking fourth in the NFL in yards allowed despite finishing 20th in points allowed (21.1 ppg). The front four found solid push from left defensive end Greg Ellis, who recorded 6.0 sacks, while Michael Myers clogged the interior. At linebacker, Dat Nguyen was a machine with 113 combined tackles, alongside Dexter Coakley's 98 stops. In the secondary, veteran safety Darren Woodson provided elite leadership, while snagging 3 interceptions. The unit's clear strength was its third-ranked pass defense, which held opponents to 2,889 yards, keeping Dallas competitive in most contests.
The season's trajectory was defined by an immediate 0-4 start, highlighted by an ugly 40-18 blowout loss to the rival Philadelphia Eagles. Dallas found brief life with consecutive wins against Washington and Arizona either side of the bye, but a painful 27-24 overtime loss to the New York Giants killed any momentum. Thanksgiving Day brought a tight 26-24 defeat to Denver, showcasing their inability to close games. A late-season 27-21 upset over the San Francisco 49ers provided a brief highlight, but a final week loss to Detroit sealed their fate.
Missing the playoffs was inevitable, but the 2001 squad holds a distinct transitional place in team history. Emmitt Smith stood as the final remaining member of the famed 'Triplets' era, continuing his march toward the all-time rushing record. The campaign offered little accolade, though linebacker Dexter Coakley earned a Pro Bowl nod for his individual efforts. Ultimately, this team is remembered as the rock bottom of the post-dynasty hangover, a cautionary tale of what happens when a legendary quarterback departs without a succession plan.
