Season Review
Dallas Cowboys 1998
The 1998 Dallas Cowboys season was a fascinating exercise in managing the slow, agonizing sunset of a dynasty. Coming off a miserable 6-10 campaign that signaled the end of the Barry Switzer era, owner Jerry Jones brought in Chan Gailey as head coach to steady the ship. Gailey did exactly that, guiding America’s Team to a 10-6 record and reclaiming the NFC East crown after going a perfect 8-0 in divisional play. Yet, the underlying truth was that this roster was no longer the terrifying juggernaut that owned the early part of the decade. They squeaked by when they needed to, relying heavily on veteran savvy to navigate a transition year that felt like an ending disguised as a new beginning.
Offensively, the Cowboys underwent a stylistic makeover under Gailey, leaning hard on ground approach that ranked 9th in total points with 381 (23.8 ppg) and 8th in total yards. Troy Aikman remained the undisputed general, throwing for 2,330 yards and 12 touchdowns while operating with elite efficiency, tossing just 5 interceptions over his 11 starts. When Aikman was sidelined with injuries, Jason Garrett stepped in to start 5 games, throwing for 1,206 yards and keeping the season afloat. The engine of the unit, however, was still Emmitt Smith, who gritted out 1,332 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on 319 carries. Out wide, Michael Irvin defied father time with 74 receptions for 1,057 yards, serving as the physical emotional barometer for a passing game that found crucial help from Billy Davis and Ernie Mills.
On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys fielded a unit that was frustratingly paradoxical, ranking an elite 3rd in points allowed (17.2 ppg) but dropping to 18th in total yards surrendered. Defensive coordinator Brian Stewart’s group excelled in high-stakes situations, anchored by a veteran core that knew exactly how to close out games. Defensive tackle Leon Lett earned Pro Bowl honors while commanding the trenches alongside defensive end Kavika Pittman, who led the team with 6.0 sacks. Linebacker Randall Godfrey led the defense with 86 total tackles, while Dexter Coakley provided sideline-to-sideline speed. In the secondary, safety Darren Woodson remained an elite enforcer, and dynamic draft pick Greg Ellis injected youth into the front four, helping mask a unit that struggled to generate turnovers.
For the 1998 Cowboys, the schedule was a roller coaster ride. After a statement 31-7 demolition of the rival New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 3, Dallas hit their stride in November, rattling off four straight wins to climb to 8-3. The momentum shattered on Thanksgiving Day against the Minnesota Vikings, where rookie Randy Moss detonated for three long touchdowns in a brutal 46-36 defeat. That loss triggered a concerning late-season stumble, including a dismal 22-3 blowout at the hands of the New Orleans Saints and a tight loss to Kansas City. Dallas managed to steady themselves with ugly, old-school divisional wins over Philadelphia and Washington to lock up the East, but the warning lights were flashing.
The bill came due in the Wild Card round against the Arizona Cardinals, a team Dallas had already beaten twice in the regular season. The Cowboys looked old and completely out of answers, turning the ball over three times as Aikman endured a nightmare 3-interception performance in a stunning 20-7 home loss. It was Arizona’s first postseason win in half a century, making the exit particularly bitter. Deion Sanders provided a lone bright spot on the year, securing First-Team All-Pro honors and finishing 5th in Defensive Player of the Year voting. In retrospect, the 1998 team holds a unique place in franchise lore. It was the last stand of the Triplets in the postseason, proving that while they still possessed the heart of champions, the dynasty’s expiration date had officially arrived.
