Season Review

Cleveland Browns 2024

The 2024 Cleveland Browns entered the year riding high on playoff expectations but instead plummeted into a catastrophic 3-14 abyss, finishing last in the AFC North. Under head coach Kevin Stefanski, a roster featuring an allegedly elite defense and new weapons was primed for a deep run. Offseason acquisitions like wideout Jerry Jeudy and backup quarterback Jameis Winston were meant to safeguard the offense. Instead, systemic dysfunction turned the season into a total multi-car pileup. The Browns' campaign ended by October, plunging the franchise into an immediate existential crisis.

Cleveland's offense was an unmitigated disaster, ranking dead last in the league with just 258 points (15.2 ppg). Deshaun Watson started seven painful games, throwing for 1,148 yards and five touchdowns while swallowing 33 sacks before a season-ending injury. Amazingly, the Browns led the NFL with 661 pass attempts but tossed a league-worst 23 interceptions. Winston injected brief life into the passing game, throwing for 2,121 yards and 13 touchdowns over seven starts. Jeudy was the lone bright spot, hauling in 90 catches for 1,229 yards to earn a Pro Bowl nod, while Nick Chubb struggled to regain form, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry.

Jim Schwartz's defense completely collapsed, cratering to 27th in points allowed (25.6 ppg) and 19th in yards surrendered. Opponents gashed the front seven for 22 rushing touchdowns. Despite the regression, defensive end Myles Garrett remained a game-wrecking outlier, racking up 14.0 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, and 28 quarterback hits to earn first-team All-Pro honors. In the secondary, cornerback Denzel Ward provided elite coverage with 19 passes defended to secure a Pro Bowl bid, while safety Grant Delpit tallied 111 tackles. However, the unit failed to force turnovers, managing a pathetic, league-low four interceptions all year.

The season's trajectory shifted in Week 7 when Watson went down. Enter Winston, who delivered a breathtaking Week 8 masterpiece, throwing for 334 yards to upset the Baltimore Ravens 29-24. Cleveland captured another brief moment of chaotic joy in Week 12, defeating the rival Pittsburgh Steelers 24-19 on a snowy Thursday night. But those wins were fleeting mirages. The Browns crumbled over the winter, closing out the year on a miserable six-game losing streak that featured a 41-32 shootout loss to Denver and culminated in a 35-10 blowout defeat by Baltimore.

Missing the playoffs by a mile, the 3-14 Browns finished as one of the most disappointing teams in franchise history, proving how quickly things can change in the NFL. While Garrett and Jeudy secured Pro Bowl accolades, individual highlights could not mask a toxic minus-22 turnover differential and a league-high 66 sacks allowed. This lost season exposed fundamental flaws across the roster, leaving the front office facing salary cap hell and massive questions about their quarterback identity moving forward.
