Season Review
Cleveland Browns 2011
The 2011 Cleveland Browns entered the year under fresh leadership, hiring Pat Shurmur as head coach to instill a brand-new culture. Cleveland supplemented the roster with free agents like safety Usama Young and cornerback Dimitri Patterson, hoping to build a competitive foundation in the brutal AFC North. Instead, the season devolved into a grueling 4-12 campaign, anchoring the Browns at the bottom of the division. The team missed the postseason entirely, crippled by offensive stagnation and an inability to close out tight contests, setting the stage for yet another front-office re-evaluation.
The offense was a painful watch, ranking 30th in points scored with 218 (13.6 ppg) and 29th in total yards. Sophomore quarterback Colt McCoy threw for 2,733 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions across 13 starts before injuries shortened his year. The ground game never found its rhythm, as Madden cover athlete Peyton Hillis was limited to 587 rushing yards due to injuries, forcing Chris Ogbonnaya into a larger role. Rookie wideout Greg Little led the aerial attack with 61 receptions for 709 yards, but Shurmur’s offense lacked explosive elements, averaging a meager 4.5 yards per play.
Conversely, the defense was an absolute bright spot under coordinator Dick Jauron, finishing an impressive fifth in points allowed - conceding only 19.2 ppg - and tenth in yards allowed. The unit was anchored by middle linebacker D’Qwell Jackson, who racked up a staggering 158 combined tackles, and rookie defensive end Jabaal Sheard, who registered a team-high 8.5 sacks. Cleveland boasted the league’s second-ranked pass defense, spearheaded by cornerbacks Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown. Despite a secondary that choked opposing passing games, the run defense struggled mightily, ranking 30th in yards surrendered on the ground.
The season had fleeting moments of optimism, including a 2-1 start highlighted by a narrow 17-16 win over Miami. Later, a bizarre 6-3 defensive slog victory against Seattle in Week 7 showed exactly how thin the margin of error was. The wheels completely fell off down the stretch during a brutal six-game losing streak to close out the year. The low point came in a Week 14 loss to rival Pittsburgh, when McCoy took a devastating, controversial hit from James Harrison that symbolized the punishing nature of Cleveland’s season.
Missing the playoffs was a foregone conclusion long before January, cementing this team’s legacy as one of an imbalanced roster that never really stood a chance of making a playoff push. There were individual triumphs, however; tackle Joe Thomas earned First-Team All-Pro honors, and Jackson finished second in Comeback Player of the Year voting. Historically, the 2011 Browns serve as a stark reminder of how a premier defense can be completely wasted when paired with an anemic offense.
