Season Review
Cleveland Browns 2012
The 2012 Cleveland Browns entered the year under the shadow of an ownership change, with coach Pat Shurmur needing to show progress. Bolstered by draft picks Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden, and Mitchell Schwartz, expectations were cautiously optimistic. Instead, the Browns sputtered to a 5-11 record, finishing fourth in the AFC North and missing the postseason again. The offense was a slog, ranking 24th in points with 302 (18.9 ppg) and 25th in yards. The 29-year-old rookie Weeden threw for 3,385 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. Richardson carried the workload with 950 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, while wideout Josh Gordon flashed deep-threat potential with 805 receiving yards at 16.1 yards per reception in an inefficient scheme.
Defensively, Cleveland showed structural grit despite ranking 19th in points allowed conceding 368 (23.0 ppg) and 23rd in yards. The unit relied on middle linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, who collected 119 tackles, and safety T.J. Ward's physical presence. The pass rush featured sophomore Jabaal Sheard's seven sacks, alongside free-agent additions Juqua Parker, who had six, and Frostee Rucker, who added four. Cornerbacks Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown each snagged three interceptions to anchor the secondary. While tough in stretches, the defense frequently broke down late in games due to an astronomical time-of-possession deficit created by their stagnant offensive counterparts.
The season's trajectory was defined by extreme streaks. A brutal 0-5 start immediately buried any playoff aspirations, highlighted by a crushing 17-16 loss to Philadelphia in the opener. However, a turning point came in late November when the Browns rattled off a surprising three-game winning streak. It began with a chaotic 20-14 victory over the rival Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12, followed by wins against Oakland and Kansas City. Just as optimism built, a season-ending three-game collapse against Washington, Denver, and Pittsburgh brought reality crashing back down, anchoring the team to the bottom of the division.
Another missed postseason prompted incoming owner Jimmy Haslam to fire Shurmur, ensuring this squad's legacy as a transitional failure. Historically, the year is remembered for the draft misses of Weeden and Richardson. Yet, elite individual performances stood out. Left tackle Joe Thomas secured Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro honors, anchoring the line. Kicker Phil Dawson had a masterful year, making 29 of 31 field goals to earn his first Pro Bowl nod, while returner Josh Cribbs also received Pro Bowl honors, providing bright spots in an otherwise forgettable era.
