Season Review
Cleveland Browns 2007
The 2007 Cleveland Browns delivered one of the most delightfully bizarre, out-of-nowhere seasons in modern NFL history. Coming off a dismal 4-12 campaign, expectations were subterranean for head coach Romeo Crennel. The front office made splashes by drafting left tackle Joe Thomas and quarterback Brady Quinn, while signing veteran running back Jamal Lewis and guard Eric Steinbach. Nobody expected a winning record, especially after a disastrous Week 1. Yet, Cleveland shocked everyone, finishing 10-6 and placing second in the AFC North. Though they agonizingly missed the postseason on tiebreakers, this team completely re-energized the city.
The catalyst for this renaissance was an unexpected quarterback shift. After Charlie Frye was benched in the opener, Derek Anderson took the reins, transforming the offense into a vertical juggernaut that finished eighth in points with 402 (25.1 ppg) and yards with 5,621. Anderson threw for 3,787 yards and 29 touchdowns. He fed wideout Braylon Edwards, who exploded for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns, and tight end Kellen Winslow, who caught 82 passes for 1,106 yards. Supported by the stellar rookie Thomas, Jamal Lewis rejuvenated his career on the ground, churning out 1,304 rushing yards and nine scores.
While the offense lit up scoreboards, the defense spent the year trying to survive. Cleveland ranked 30th in yards allowed and 21st in points surrendered conceding 23.9 ppg, dragging the team into weekly shootouts. The unit continued to struggle against the run, ranking 27th, but relied on secondary playmaking. Cornerback Leigh Bodden grabbed six interceptions, while safety Sean Jones logged 96 tackles and five picks. Inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson anchored the middle with 101 tackles. However, their inability to stop sustained drives forced the offense to remain in an aggressive, high-risk passing style all season.
The season shifted in Week 2 during a wild 51-45 shootout victory over Cincinnati. The schedule became a weekly thriller, highlighted by dramatic overtime wins against Seattle and Baltimore, the latter secured by Phil Dawson's famous carom field goal. The critical collapse happened in Week 16's freezing rematch against the Bengals, where Anderson threw four interceptions in a costly 19-14 loss. Though Cleveland recovered to beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-7 in Week 17, that painful division defeat officially pulled the rug out from under their playoff hopes.
At 10-6, the Browns agonizingly missed the playoffs due to tiebreakers, a heartbreaking fate for a spectacular regular season. Still, the legacy of this team is unforgettable. Six Browns earned Pro Bowl honors, including Anderson, Edwards, Winslow, Thomas, and special teams ace Josh Cribbs, who gained 1,809 kick return yards with two touchdowns. Thomas finished second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, cementing his status as a cornerstone. It remains a beloved, lightning-in-a-bottle campaign in modern Cleveland lore - a fleeting moment where everything clicked and football was incredibly fun.
