Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2024
The 2024 New Orleans Saints campaign felt like a season-long fever dream that began with euphoria and ended in cold, hard reality. Coming off a middle-of-the-road previous season, expectations were modestly tied to a weak NFC South, bolstered by free-agent additions like defensive end Chase Young. Instead, New Orleans bottomed out at 5-12, finishing dead last in the division. The implosion prompted a mid-season coaching dismissal, as Dennis Allen was dismissed after a wretched 2-7 start, leaving interim man Darren Rizzi to cobble together a 3-5 finish. It marked the definitive end of the post-Drew Brees transition era, plunging the franchise into a necessary but painful rebuild.
Offensively, the Saints were the ultimate Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde act, finishing 24th in points scored (19.9 ppg) and 21st in total yards. Derek Carr started 10 games under center, showing real efficiency with 2,145 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions for a 101.0 passer rating. However, Carr missed significant time due to injury, forcing rookie Spencer Rattler into a brutal 0-6 trial by fire as a starter. When the offense functioned, it leaned heavily on a balanced attack led by Alvin Kamara, who amassed 950 rushing yards, 6 scores, and added 68 receptions. Playmaker Rashid Shaheed provided early vertical juice with three receiving scores, while tight end Foster Moreau emerged as a decent redzone target with 5 touchdown grabs.
On the other side of the ball, the defense could not uphold its recent stout reputation, cratering to 30th in total yards allowed while managing to finish a deceptive 19th in points conceded (23.4 ppg). The unit struggled heavily on the ground, ranking 31st in rushing yards allowed and matching that with a 31st ranking in yards allowed per carry at. Up front, sophomore defensive tackle Bryan Bresee flashed immense promise by leading the squad with 7.5 sacks, while veteran edge rushers Carl Granderson and Chase Young each chipped in 5.5 sacks. In the secondary, Alontae Taylor was a versatile disruptor with 4 sacks and 16 passes defended, alongside veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu, who anchored the back end with a team-high 3 interceptions.
If you want to understand the absurdity of the NFL, look no further than the opening month of this New Orleans season. The Saints opened by absolutely lighting up the Carolina Panthers 47-10, followed by a shocking 44-19 road thrashing of the Dallas Cowboys that had analysts crowing about a modern offensive revolution in the bayou. Then the wheels didn't just come offโthey achieved escape velocity, taking the season with them. New Orleans collapsed into a soul-crushing seven-game losing streak, highlighted by a horrific 51-27 defensive surrender to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and a rock-bottom 23-22 loss to the previously dismissed Panthers in Week 9. Rizzi catalyzed a brief two-game winning streak in November against Atlanta and Cleveland, but the year ended in a whimper with a further four straight losses.
With zero postseason football to distract them, the franchise was forced to look inward at its own trajectory. The legacy of the 2024 Saints is defined by the expiration date of a roster structure that had been pushed to its financial cap limits for a decade. While individual bright spots like special teams ace J.T. Gray earned second-team All-Pro honors, the year will be remembered as the point where the bill finally came due in New Orleans. They missed the playoffs not because of bad luck or tie-breakers, but because a top-heavy, veteran core led by 35-year-olds Demario Davis and Cameron Jordan could no longer sustain a competitive standard across a grueling 17-game marathon.
