Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2010
The 2010 New Orleans Saints entered the season bearing the heavy crown of defending Super Bowl champions, navigating a highly competitive NFC South where every opponent sought dethronement. Under the offensive stewardship of head coach Sean Payton, the team secured a competitive 11-5 record, finishing second in the division behind the ascendant Atlanta Falcons. Offseason defensive augmentations included the addition of free agents Alex Brown, Clint Ingram, and Jimmy Wilkerson to reinforce the front seven, alongside drafting defensive back Patrick Robinson and tight end Jimmy Graham to inject youth into the roster. Despite high external expectations for a consecutive championship run, New Orleans settled for a wild card berth, illustrating just how difficult sustaining dominance is in the modern NFL landscape.
Offensively, the Saints maintained their signature high-flying identity, finishing the regular season ranked third in passing yards and sixth in overall yards. Quarterback Drew Brees marshaled the unit by throwing for 4,620 yards and 33 touchdowns, executing Paytonโs aggressive pass-heavy system with a 68.1% completion percentage, though he did toss 22 interceptions. Wide receiver Marques Colston crossed the thousand-yard mark yet again with 1,023 yards and seven touchdowns, while Lance Moore emerged as a highly dependable secondary option, securing 66 receptions, 638 yards and eight touchdowns. The ground game relied heavily on rookie Chris Ivory, who filled in effectively due to injuries in the backfield by logging a team-high 716 rushing yards and five scores at an impressive 5.2 yards per carry.
On the other side of the ball, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams oversaw a resilient unit that ranked fourth in total yards allowed and seventh in points allowed (19.2 ppg). Pro Bowl linebacker Jonathan Vilma anchored the interior defense by leading the team with 105 combined tackles, while safety Roman Harper provided fierce run support and intermediate coverage, forcing six fumbles and logging 98 tackles to earn his own Pro Bowl nod. The secondary was bolstered by second-year safety Malcolm Jenkins, who recorded two interceptions, including a spectacular 96-yard touchdown return, while defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis anchored the interior pass rush with a team-high six sacks. While not as reliant on defensive touchdowns as the championship squad from the prior year, this defensive group proved to be solid across the regular season campaign.
Key stretches dictated the trajectory of the Saints season, highlighted by an early four-point loss to the Falcons in overtime and a confounding October defeat to the Arizona Cardinals. However, the true turning point arrived later in the autumn when Payton rallied his team to a crucial six-game winning streak from late October through mid-December. This run featured a dominant 20-10 victory over the rugged Pittsburgh Steelers and a dramatic 30-27 holiday triumph against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving day. A late-season peak occurred in Week 16 with a tight 17-14 road victory over their division rival Falcons in Atlanta, though a regular-season finale loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ultimately forced them onto the road for the opening round of the postseason.
The postseason journey concluded in stunning fashion during the Wild Card round, as the heavily favored Saints suffered a 41-36 upset against the 7-9 Seattle Seahawks on the road. Despite Brees throwing for 404 yards, the defense surrendered a late touchdown run to Marshawn Lynch that effectively ended the title defense. The legacy of this 2010 squad remains defined by their efficiency and elite roster depth, sending Brees, guards Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks, Vilma, and Harper to the Pro Bowl while Jenkins secured second-team All-Pro honors. The season highlighted the brutal reality of the post-championship hangover in professional football, serving as a cautionary tale of how quickly a title defense can be derailed despite possessing an elite, championship-caliber roster.
