Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2013
The 2013 New Orleans Saints campaign was defined by a desperate need for normalization and the return of head coach Sean Payton. Following the chaos of the previous year, the franchise sought to re-establish its dominance in the competitive NFC South. Payton immediate impact brought a distinct identity back to the roster, driving the team to an 11-5 regular season finish and a second-place standing in the division. Key personnel acquisitions added vital structure to a team with high aspirations. The front office fortified the secondary by signing free-agent cornerback Keenan Lewis and drafting safety Kenny Vaccaro in the first round. These crucial moves helped ensure the team punched its ticket back to the postseason as a wild-card participant, setting up a deep winter run.
Offensively, the unit operated with its signature surgical precision, finishing second in the league in passing yards and fourth in total offensive yards. Quarterback Drew Brees put together another prolific regular season, throwing for 5,162 yards and 39 touchdowns while completing 68.6% of his passes. The attack heavily favored a dynamic passing game, orchestrated through the unstoppable matchup nightmare that was tight end Jimmy Graham, who hauled in 86 receptions for 1,215 yards and a massive 16 touchdowns. Running backs Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles served as prototypical dual-threat options out of the backfield, combining for 148 catches. Wide receiver Marques Colston remained a highly reliable option, chipping in 943 yards to round out a top-10 scoring unit that averaged 25.9 points per game.
The real story of the season, however, was the dramatic renaissance of the defense under new coordinator Rob Ryan. Ranking fourth in both points allowed (19.0 ppg) and total yards surrendered, this group transformed from a liability into a legitimate championship-caliber defense. Outside linebacker Junior Galette and Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Jordan formed a fierce pass-rush duo, terrorizing opposing quarterbacks with 12.0 and 12.5 sacks respectively. Inside linebacker Curtis Lofton anchored the middle of the field with a team-high 125 combined tackles, while the physical rookie Vaccaro injected intense energy into the secondary. The defense starkest improvement came against the aerial attack, where they surrendered just 3,105 passing yards all year to finish second in the NFL.
New Orleans season was characterized by dominant stretches at home contrasted with baffling speed bumps on the road. The Saints burst out of the gate with a 5-0 start, highlighted by a season-opening 23-17 win over the rival Atlanta Falcons. A massive turning point occurred in Week 10 during a Sunday Night Football showcase against the Dallas Cowboys, where Brees exploded for 392 passing yards in a 49-17 blowout victory that set an NFL record for first downs in a single game with 40. However, cracks in the armor showed during a rough December stretch. The team suffered a blowout 34-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks at a deafening CenturyLink Field and dropped a critical 17-13 divisional battle to the Carolina Panthers, which ultimately cost them the NFC South crown.
In the postseason, the Saints made franchise history by securing their first-ever road playoff victory, a thrilling 26-24 Wild Card win against the Philadelphia Eagles decided by a last-second Shayne Graham field kick. The journey ended the following week in a tight 23-15 Divisional Round loss during a rematch with the eventual champion Seahawks. This 2013 squad proved that New Orleans could play elite defensive football in the Payton-Brees era rather than relying solely on shootout victories. Individually, Brees earned another Pro Bowl nod, Jimmy Graham was named a first-team All-Pro, and Vaccaro finished third in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting, cementing the legacy of this incredibly balanced team.
