Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2007
Following a magical run to the NFC Championship Game, the 2007 New Orleans Saints entered the year with massive expectations but ultimately stumbled to a 7-9 record and a third-place finish in the NFC South. Head coach Sean Payton tried to build on the previous year’s momentum by bringing in free agents like cornerback Jason David and veteran wideout David Patten, while selecting future building blocks like Jermon Bushrod in the draft. However, the high-flying expectations evaporated rapidly in September as the team failed to secure a playoff berth. A brutal four-game losing streak to start the season doomed their postseason ambitions from the jump, leaving New Orleans to play catch-up in a highly competitive division.
Under center, Drew Brees orchestrated a highly potent, pass-heavy offensive attack that ranked fourth in total yards and first in passing attempts league-wide. Brees was a machine, completing 67.5% of his 652 passes for 4,423 yards and 28 touchdowns, though his aggression also led to 18 interceptions. Wide receiver Marques Colston served as the primary aerial weapon, hauling in 98 receptions for 1,202 yards and 11 scores. The ground game suffered a catastrophic blow when star running back Deuce McAllister suffered a season-ending injury after just three games, forcing Reggie Bush to carry a heavier load with 581 rushing yards alongside a team-high 73 receptions. Despite finishing twelfth in scoring offense (23.7 ppg), the unit remained incredibly dangerous moving the chains.
While the offense put up gaudy numbers, the defense was a leaky sieve that derailed the season, ranking twenty-fifth in points allowed (24.3 ppg) and twenty-sixth in total yards. The unit struggled severely against the pass, ranking thirtieth in passing yards allowed and dead last in net yards allowed per pass attempt. Defensive end Will Smith was a rare bright spot upfront, pressuring quarterbacks with a team-leading 7.0 sacks and 19 quarterback hits. In the secondary, safety Roman Harper and cornerback Mike McKenzie each snagged three interceptions, with McKenzie returning two for touchdowns. Linebacker Scott Fujita also anchored the middle with 95 combined tackles, but these individual efforts could not shield a defense that routinely surrendered big plays.
Crucial swings defined the narrative of the season, beginning with a humiliating 41-10 blowout loss against the Indianapolis Colts on opening night. After an abysmal 0-4 start, the Saints ignited a thrilling four-game winning streak, highlighted by a dominant 41-24 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars where the offense exploded for 538 total yards. The turning point and ultimate collapse arrived in late November and December. New Orleans dropped a heartbreaking 27-23 contest to division rival Tampa Bay, and despite bouncing back to pull even at 7-7, they collapsed in the final two weeks, losing consecutive games to the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears to seal their elimination.
Missing the postseason just one year after capturing the hearts of football fans everywhere cemented the 2007 squad as a classic hangover team. The significance of this specific campaign lies in how it solidified Sean Payton’s identity as an uncompromising offensive mastermind willing to pass on any down. Drew Brees proved his durability by starting all 16 games and executing the system flawlessly, foreshadowing the legendary offenses that would define the franchise over the next decade. Though they missed out on hardware and individual accolades, the resilience shown after their poor start laid the groundwork for a roster that would peak just two seasons later.
