Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2017
The 2017 New Orleans Saints campaign felt like a cinematic reboot of a franchise that had grown dangerously stale after three consecutive 7-9 finishes. Entering the year with modest expectations and a mandate to fix a porous defense, head coach Sean Payton engineered a brilliant turnaround fueled by arguably the greatest draft class of the century, featuring cornerstone pieces like Marshon Lattimore and Alvin Kamara alongside free-agent upgrades like Larry Warford. The result was an explosive 11-5 regular-season record and a highly competitive NFC South division title. This team did not just back into the postseason; they completely reimagined their identity, transitioning from a pass-happy circus into a balanced, physical juggernaut that captured the top spot in the division and re-established New Orleans as a legitimate Super Bowl contender.
For years, the offensive blueprint in New Orleans meant asking Drew Brees to throw for 5,000 yards while hoping for the best. The 2017 season flipped the script by deploying an efficient, balanced attack that finished second in total yards and fourth in points (28.0 ppg) across the league. Brees was masterful under a reduced volume, leading the NFL with a 72.0 percent completion rate while throwing for 4,334 yards and 23 touchdowns against a mere 8 interceptions. The real engine, however, was the dual-threat backfield anomaly of Mark Ingram, who ran for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns, and rookie sensation Alvin Kamara, who amassed 728 rushing yards and 826 receiving yards for 13 combined touchdowns. Out wide, Michael Thomas cemented his elite status by reeling in 104 receptions for 1,245 yards, giving the Saints a devastatingly efficient attack.
Defensively, the Saints finally shed their reputation as a weekly punching bag, climbing all the way to a tenth-place ranking in points allowed by yielding just 326 points (20.4 ppg) all season. The transformation was spearheaded by first-team All-Pro defensive end Cameron Jordan, who wrecked opposing game plans to the tune of 13.0 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, and 11 passes defended. In the secondary, first-round cornerback Marshon Lattimore locked down one side of the field with 5 interceptions and 18 passes defended, while fellow rookie Marcus Williams anchored the deep third with 4 picks. Backed by solid veteran contributions from free agent addition A.J. Klein, this unit paired a highly aggressive pass rush with an opportunistic secondary that intercepted 20 passes, giving the franchise its most balanced roster in nearly a decade.
Every great season needs a defining stretch, and the Saints found theirs after a troubling 0-2 start against Minnesota and New England. Beginning with a statement 34-13 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Week 3, New Orleans ripped off an incredible eight-game winning streak that flipped the entire NFC hierarchy on its head. The stretch featured high-scoring showcases, including a wild 52-38 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 6, and absolute defensive masterclasses like a 20-0 shutout against the Miami Dolphins in London. A thrilling, overtime 34-31 comeback win against the Washington Redskins in Week 11 showcased their championship resolve, proving that this version of the Saints could win shootouts just as easily as they could grind out physical victories on the road.
While the postseason run concluded in heartbreaking fashion on the final play of a 29-24 divisional round loss to the Vikings in Minneapolis dubbed the 'Minneapolis Miracle', the legacy of the 2017 Saints remains incredibly influential. They conquered the division by defeating the Panthers a third time in a 31-26 Wild Card battle, proving their regular-season dominance was no fluke. This squad will always be remembered for a legendary rookie class that swept the major honors, as Alvin Kamara claimed Offensive Rookie of the Year and Marshon Lattimore secured Defensive Rookie of the Year. They successfully prolonged the competitive window of the Brees-Payton era, leaving an indelible mark as one of the most exciting and well-constructed rosters in recent franchise history.
