Season Review
New Orleans Saints 2019
Entering the 2019 season, the New Orleans Saints carried the heavy burden of the previous year’s agonizing NFC Championship Game officiating disaster. Driven by a burning desire for redemption, head coach Sean Payton built a incredibly efficient machine designed to secure home-field advantage. The front office bolstered the roster by signing prominent free agents like tight end Jared Cook and veteran running face Latavius Murray to round out an already potent roster, while adding reinforcements through the draft with center Erik McCoy and defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. The formula worked brilliantly throughout the regular season, culminating in a dominant 13-3 record and a runaway first-place finish in the NFC South. New Orleans proved they belonged in the elite tier of the league, yet the outstanding campaign was ultimately marred by a shocking failure to secure a first-round postseason bye, setting up a perilous path in January.
Statistically, the offense operated at a championship level, finishing the regular season ranked third in the league in points scored with 458 points (28.6 ppg). The year tested the team’s depth immediately when future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees suffered a thumb injury in Week 2, forcing free agent acquisition Teddy Bridgewater into the starting lineup. Bridgewater saved the season by going a flawless 5-0 in his starts, keeping the ship steady with 1,384 passing yards and nine touchdowns. Once Brees returned, he weaponized the offense with surgical precision, completing 74.3% of his passes for 2,979 yards and 27 touchdowns against just four interceptions. Wide receiver Michael Thomas put together a historic campaign, operating as an unstoppable force by hauling in an NFL-record 149 receptions for 1,725 yards. Running back Alvin Kamara provided his signature versatility with 1,330 yards from scrimmage, while Cook added aerial explosiveness by catching nine touchdowns.
While the offense grabbed the national headlines, the Saints defensive unit provided the backbone required to sustain a championship pursuit, finishing the season ranked eleventh in total yards allowed and thirteenth in points allowed (21.3 ppg). Coordinated with an aggressive mentality, the defense specialized in suffocating opposing ground games, ranking fourth in the league in rushing yards surrendered. Legendary defensive end Cameron Jordan enjoyed a career year, terrorizing opposing quarterbacks to the tune of 15.5 sacks and 25 quarterback hits to earn Second-Team All-Pro honors. Behind the fierce pass rush, linebacker Demario Davis functioned as a sideline-to-sideline dynamic weapon, securing First-Team All-Pro recognition after racking up 111 combined tackles and 12 passes defended. In the secondary, safety Marcus Williams snagged a team-high four interceptions, while Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore erased top opposing receivers to lock down the perimeter.
Looking back at the schedule, the trajectory of the season was defined by crucial turning points and unforgettable high-stakes thrillers. The drama started in Week 1, when kicker Wil Lutz nailed a 58-yard field goal as time expired to secure a heart-pounding 30-28 victory over the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. Following Brees’ injury against the Rams the next week, Bridgewater’s flawless five-game winning streak became the definitive turning point that preserved New Orleans’ championship aspirations, highlighted by a gritty 12-10 defensive masterclass against the Dallas Cowboys. Later in the year, the Saints engaged in an absolute classic against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14, an offensive explosion that resulted in a heartbreaking 46-48 defeat at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Though the team closed out the regular season on a fierce three-game winning streak outscoring opponents 114-45, the earlier home loss to the 49ers cost them a top-two seed in the conference.
Despite a stellar regular season, the legacy of the team was permanently fractured by a crushing disappointment in the opening round of the postseason. Forced to play on Wild Card weekend despite winning 13 games, the Saints hosted the Minnesota Vikings and suffered a stunning 20-26 overtime defeat after failing to stop a walk-off touchdown pass. The premature exit overshadowed a collection of incredible individual achievements, led by Michael Thomas capturing the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award. Deonte Harty and special teams standout J.T. Gray both earned All-Pro nods, showcasing the roster’s top-to-bottom quality. This squad remains one of the greatest regular season teams to ever miss out on a playoff bye, serving as a cautionary tale of how microscopic margins in December can derail a championship window.
