Fresh off an unexpected division title the prior year, the 2021 Washington Football Team entered the season looking to build long-term stability under head coach Ron Rivera. The primary offseason focus centered on anchoring the roster with experienced leadership, highlighted by the free agent signing of veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick alongside secondary additions William Jackson III and Bobby McCain. However, any grand strategic plans evaporated in Week 1 when Fitzpatrick suffered a season-ending hip injury against the Los Angeles Chargers. Washington tumbled to 25th in points allowed (25.5 ppg) and 22nd in yards surrendered, routinely struggling to contain opposing aerial attacks. A series of injuries dismantled the pass rush, as elite edge defender Chase Young suffered a torn ACL in Week 10 to finish with just 1.5 sacks in nine games, while Montez Sweat was limited to ten contests. Interior lineman Jonathan Allen was the clear defensive standout, earning Pro Bowl honors by racking up 9.0 sacks and 30 quarterback hits. Linebacker Cole Holcomb paced the unit with 142 combined tackles, and McCain grabbed a team-high four interceptions, but it was not enough to patch up a leaky secondary.

The trajectory of the season was defined by extreme streaks and sudden turning points. A dismal 2-6 start left Rivera’s squad looking dead in the water by late October but a shocking 29-19 upset of the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10 sparked an unexpected four-game winning streak. By early December, a gritty road victory over the Las Vegas Raiders pulled Washington to 6-6 and put them squarely in control of their playoff destiny. However, the wheels fell off during a brutal late-season division stretch, highlighted by a crushing 56-14 blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 16 that extinguished any lingering postseason aspirations. Lacking a true franchise quarterback, this transitionary squad served as the final roster before the historic franchise officially rebranded as the Commanders the following spring.
