Season Review
Washington Redskins 1998
The 1998 Washington Redskins season was a masterclass in how quickly an NFL franchise can find itself trapped in football purgatory. Coming off an 8-7-1 campaign, expectations were high for head coach Norv Turner to finally break through into the postseason hierarchy. Instead, Washington stumbled out of the gate to a catastrophic 0-7 start, effectively ending their season before the calendar flipped to November. Despite a furious late-season surge under Turner, the team finished a dismal 6-10, landing in fourth place in the competitive NFC East and missing the playoffs.
Offensively, the narrative was thoroughly dominated by the unexpected emergence of Trent Green. Stepping in for an ineffective Gus Frerotte, Green provided a massive spark, tossing for 3,441 yards and 23 touchdowns while engineering a heavy passing attack that ranked 13th in the league. Green found reliable targets in dynamic wide receivers Michael Westbrook, who hauled in 736 yards and six touchdowns, and Leslie Shepherd, who led the team with eight receiving scores. The ground game relied on the bruising tandem of Terry Allen and rookie Skip Hicks, but the overall offense lacked the consistency required to offset a porous defensive unit.
That brings us to the real problem: the defense. Despite adding highly touted defensive tackles Dana Stubblefield and Dan 'Big Daddy' Wilkinson in free agency to fortify the line, Washington leaked oil all year. The unit surrendered 421 points (26.3 ppg), ranking a brutal 28th in the NFL in scoring defense, and finished 24th in total yards allowed. While Wilkinson lived up to his billing by anchoring the pass rush with 7.5 sacks and Kenard Lang added 7.0 of his own, the secondary could not contain opposing passing attacks, rendering spectacular individual effort from veteran ageless wonder cornerback Darrell Green completely moot.
The initial seven-game slide was punctuated by demoralizing blowout losses to the rival San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings, where the defense surrendered 45 and 41 points respectively. However, the true gut-punch occurred in Week 12 against the Arizona Cardinals, where a breathtaking offensive explosion resulted in a heart-wrenching 45-42 defeat. Just when the season felt totally dead, Washington pulled off a shocking four-game winning streak through November and December, showcasing the tantalizing potential that this roster possessed when firing on all cylinders.
The legacy of the 1998 squad is defined by what could have been. Their 6-10 record meant another winter without playoff football, but the late-season resiliency showed a locker room that refused to quit on Turner. The lone bright spot on the franchise mantle came from special teams wizard Matt Turk, who earned Pro Bowl honors as a premier punter. This season became the ultimate prologue to a wild offseason, as it set the stage for Trent Greenβs impending departure and the monumental arrival of a flashy new owner named Daniel Snyder.
