Season Review
Washington Redskins 1994
The 1994 Washington Redskins season was a brutal wake-up call for a proud franchise adjusting to life after Joe Gibbs. Entering the year with fresh hope under rookie head coach Norv Turner, the team instead crashed to a miserable 3-13 record, anchoring the bottom of the NFC East. Offseason additions like veteran wideout Henry Ellard and linebacker Ken Harvey provided individual sparks, but they could not mask a roster in deep transition. Turner’s debut campaign evaporated quickly into a grueling rebuilding year, leaving the RFK Stadium faithful completely starved for victories as the team missed the postseason.
Turner’s offense finished 13th in scoring with 320 points (20.0 ppg) but struggled mightily with consistency, operating a streaky passing attack that threw a league-worst 27 interceptions. The quarterback position was a total carousel. First-round savior Heath Shuler staggered through eight starts, throwing 10 touchdowns against 12 picks with a dreadful 45.3 percent completion rate, forcing John Friesz and Gus Frerotte into action. The lone bright spot was the ageless Henry Ellard, who defied his 33 years by racking up 1,397 receiving yards on 74 catches. Meanwhile, the ground game sputtered, with Ricky Ervins managing just 650 rushing yards as Washington finished 24th in total rushing.
If the offense was erratic, the defense was a flat-out disaster, ranking 28th in points allowed (25.8 ppg) and 26th in total yards. Opponents routinely gashed the unit, piling up 412 points and 24 rushing touchdowns over 16 regular season games. Free-agent prize Ken Harvey was an absolute warrior, terrorizing opposing quarterbacks to the tune of 13.5 sacks to earn a Pro Bowl nod. Cornerback Darrell Green brought his usual veteran stability with three interceptions, while linebacker Andre Collins chipped in four picks and two defensive scores. However, these individual efforts could not salvage a defensive front that surrendered a costly 1,975 rushing yards.
The season offered a brief illusion of competence when Washington blasted the New Orleans Saints 38-24 in Week 2 to even their record. What followed was a spectacular collapse, highlighted by a five-game losing streak that buried their season by mid October. A lone 41-27 triumph over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8 provided temporary relief, but it was immediately followed by another agonizing seven-game slide. The season was defined by painful close losses, including an overtime heartbreak against the Arizona Cardinals and a pair of tight defeats to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that exposed the team’s persistent inability to protect the football.
A meaningless 24-21 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in the finale did little to soften the blow of a historically bad campaign. This group earned a grim legacy as one of the worst teams in franchise history, setting the stage for years of quarterback instability defined by Shuler’s draft-bust trajectory. While the season was a wash, individual milestones survived, as punter Reggie Roby captured first-team All-Pro honors with a booming 44.4-yard average. Ultimately, 1994 served as a sobering reminder of how fast an NFL powerhouse can plummet to the league’s basement.
