Season Review
Washington Redskins 2013
The 2013 Washington Redskins season was a sobering reminder of how fast the NFL wheel of fortune turns. Coming off a breathtaking division title, expectations were sky-high for head coach Mike Shanahan’s squad. Instead, the campaign completely unraveled into a 3-13 disaster, leaving them buried at the bottom of the NFC East. Washington lost its final eight games in a slow-motion collapse that exposed deep roster flaws and a toxic coaching dynamic, ultimately costing Shanahan his job at the end of December. It was a chaotic, frustrating sequence of events that completely wiped out the optimism of the previous winter.
The offense never found its 2012 magic, sliding down to 23rd in points scored (20.9 ppg) despite ranking a deceiving 9th in total yards. Quarterback Robert Griffin III struggled to replicate his historic efficiency, throwing for 3,203 yards with 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions across 13 starts. The brilliant zone-read threat vanished as his mobility looked compromised, leading to 38 sacks before he was shut down for the final three weeks. Still, Pierre Garcon was an absolute premier threat, catching a spectacular 113 passes for 1,346 yards, while Alfred Morris remained a physical force in the ground game, grinding out 1,275 rushing yards and seven touchdowns to secure a Pro Bowl nod.
Defensively, the team was an absolute sieve, surrendering a staggering 478 points (29.9 ppg) to finish 30th in the league in scoring defense. Jim Haslett’s unit simply could not stop anyone, ranking 30th in net yards allowed per pass attempt and giving up a league-worst 23 rushing touchdowns. The few bright spots came from the pass-rush duo of Brian Orakpo, who earned a Pro Bowl selection with 10.0 sacks, and Ryan Kerrigan, who logged 8.5 sacks. Middle linebacker London Fletcher finished his legendary career by racking up 111 combined tackles, but the back end of the defense was repeatedly picked apart by opposing quarterbacks.
The season’s turning points were defined by defensive collapses and an inability to finish tight games. After a miserable 0-3 start, a 45-41 shootout victory over the Chicago Bears in Week 7 and an overtime triumph against the San Diego Chargers in Week 9 briefly pushed the record to 3-5. However, a Thursday night loss to Minnesota in Week 10 triggered an ugly eight-game slide to close out the year. The low point arrived in Week 15 against Atlanta, when backup quarterback Kirk Cousins started, threw three touchdowns, but tossed two critical interceptions in a painful 27-26 loss after a failed two-point conversion.
With no postseason on the horizon, the final weeks served as a showcase for young talent like rookie tight end Jordan Reed, who caught 45 passes for 499 yards in limited action. The historical legacy of the 2013 Washington squad is defined as the ultimate hangover season, representing the abrupt end of the Shanahan era and a complete organizational reset. Pierre Garcon finished sixth in Comeback Player of the Year voting, but individual accolades could not mask the franchise’s descent from division champions to the very bottom of the division standings.
