Season Review
Washington Redskins 1999
The 1999 Washington Redskins entered the season with plenty of questions under head coach Norv Turner but managed to navigate a wild ride to finish 10-6 and secure first place in the NFC East. Offseason moves injected immediate life into the franchise, most notably the high-profile trade for quarterback Brad Johnson and the veteran addition of offensive tackle Andy Heck. The front office also hit a home run in the draft by selecting future Hall of Fame cornerback Champ Bailey and tackle Jon Jansen. This collection of new talent completely shifted the expectations in Washington, as a franchise that had been stuck in mediocrity suddenly found itself hosting playoff games. Although the season ultimately ended with a heartbreaking one-point loss in the Divisional round, the 1999 campaign marked a massive leap forward and a return to relevance for a fan base starved for a winner.
Washington boasted one of the most explosive offenses in the league, finishing regular season play ranked second in both total yards and points scored (27.7 ppg). Everything revolved around Brad Johnson, who proved to be worth every bit of draft capital surrendered in the trade. Johnson put up an elite statistical year, throwing for 4,005 yards and 24 touchdowns while executing a highly efficient vertical passing attack. The ground game was equally terrifying thanks to a breakout season from running back Stephen Davis, who punished defenders for 1,405 rushing yards and a league-leading 17 touchdowns. When Johnson took to the air, wide receivers Michael Westbrook and Albert Connell stretched the field brilliantly, both eclipsing the 1,100-yard mark on the season. With fullback Larry Centers serving as a reliable safety valve out of the backfield with 69 receptions, this offense was a matchup nightmare that could beat opponents in any environment.
While the offense was putting up video game numbers, the defense provided a stressful, edge-of-your-seat experience all year. The team ranked near the bottom of the league, sitting 30th in yards allowed and 24th in points allowed, allowing 23.6 per game. Yet, despite giving up massive chunks of yardage, they survived by making timely plays, highlighted by a secondary that featured the ageless Darrell Green and the rookie sensation Champ Bailey, who grabbed five interceptions. Defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson provided a strong interior push with 8.0 sacks, while defensive end Marco Coleman chipped in 6.5 sacks. Linebacker Sam Shade also paced the unit with 115 combined tackles. It was a classic 'bend but do not break' defense that relied heavily on forcing turnovers, extracting 37 takeaways from opponents to help bail out their statistical deficiencies.
The season was defined by wild momentum swings, starting with a heartbreaking 41-35 overtime loss to the rival Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. Washington rebounded quickly, showing their ceiling in a 50-21 blowout of the New York Giants. A midseason dip saw the team drop three of four games, including a frustrating 35-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles where they committed six turnovers. However, the true turning point came when they swept their remaining division games, including a thrilling 20-17 overtime redemption victory against those same Eagles. A crucial late-season 26-20 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 16 ultimately sealed their division title, proving this squad had the resilience to survive close games and clinch the playoffs.
In the postseason, Washington handled the Detroit Lions with a convincing 27-13 victory in the Wild Card round at home. Their journey ended the following week in a tight 14-13 defensive battle against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where the offense finally stalled. Looking back, the 1999 squad holds a fascinating place in franchise history as a high-powered transition team before the chaotic Dan Snyder era fully took hold. The year was loaded with individual accolades, as Brad Johnson and Stephen Davis earned Pro Bowl selections, while Davis finished as a runner-up for Comeback Player of the Year. It remains one of the most entertaining, offensively potent seasons in modern franchise memory, remembered for its high scoring and relentless grit.
