Season Review
Los Angeles Chargers 2018
The 2018 Los Angeles Chargers season was a fascinating exercise in elite validation. Coming off a 9-7 campaign, head coach Anthony Lynn entered his second year looking to maximize Philip Rivers' veteran window. The front office fortified the roster by signing center Mike Pouncey and drafting dynamic safety Derwin James. Playing their home games in the intimate StubHub Center, the Chargers embraced a road-warrior identity to finish with an outstanding 12-4 record. Despite matching the conference's best record, tiebreakers relegated them to second in the AFC West behind the Kansas City Chiefs, forcing them into a wild card slot for the postseason.
Offensively, the Chargers were an absolute machine, finishing 6th in the league in scoring with 428 points (26.8 ppg). At 37 years old, Philip Rivers orchestrated a balanced and highly efficient attack, completing 68.3 percent of his passes for 4,308 yards, with 32 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Wide receiver Keenan Allen was uncoverable, racking up 97 catches for 1,196 yards, while Mike Williams hauled in a team-high 10 touchdowns. The ground game was equally lethal as Melvin Gordon ran for 885 yards and 10 scores, perfectly complemented by Austin Ekeler's 958 total yards from scrimmage.
The defense transformed the team into a title contender, ranking 8th in points allowed (20.6 ppg) and 9th in yards surrendered. Everything rotated around rookie safety Derwin James, who logged 105 tackles and three interceptions to earn First-Team All-Pro honors. Up front, Melvin Ingram anchored the edge with seven sacks, which kept the unit afloat while Joey Bosa missed nine games with a foot injury. In the secondary, cornerback Desmond King emerged as a defensive powerhouse, earning his own All-Pro nod for a secondary that consistently neutralized opposing air attacks.
The definitive turning point arrived on a Thursday night in December at Arrowhead Stadium. After starting the year 1-2 with losses to the Chiefs and Rams, the Chargers rattled off a massive hot streak, including a classic comeback win over the Steelers in Pittsburgh. But the Week 15 rematch in Kansas City was their masterpiece. Down late, Rivers threw a touchdown to Mike Williams with four seconds left. Lynn boldly chose to go for a two-point conversion, and Rivers found Williams again to secure a thrilling 29-28 victory.
In the playoffs, the Chargers handled the Baltimore Ravens 23-17 in the Wild Card round before falling 41-28 to the New England Patriots in the Divisional round. Despite the exit, the legacy of this squad remains incredibly strong. James, King, and special teamer Adrian Phillips secured First-Team All-Pro nods, while Rivers, Allen, Gordon, Pouncey, and Ingram earned Pro Bowl selections. This season represented the absolute competitive peak of the late-career Rivers era, balancing veteran leadership with a collection of young, electric superstars.
