Season Review
San Diego Chargers 2000
The 2000 San Diego Chargers season was an agonizing exercise in football futility, culminating in a dismal 1-15 record and a dead-last finish in the AFC West. Head coach Mike Riley entered his second year under immense pressure, leaning on free-agent receiver Curtis Conway to spark the roster. Instead, the Chargers plummeted into a historically bleak abyss, matching the worst record in franchise history. The optimism of a new millennium evaporated instantly, leaving Southern California fans trapped in a sixteen-game survival test that offered no relief.
Offensively, the Chargers were an unwatchable cocktail of ineptitude, ranking 26th in points (16.8 ppg) and 28th in yards. The tragedy centered on quarterback Ryan Leaf, whose draft bust status solidified as he threw for 1,883 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions in nine starts. When Leaf faltered, 37-year-old Jim Harbaugh stepped into the quicksand, tossing 10 interceptions of his own. San Diego lacked a ground game, finishing 31st in rushing as Terrell Fletcher led the team with just 384 yards. Wideout Jeff Graham managed 907 receiving yards, but his efforts were neutralized by 30 total team interceptions.
The tragic hero was the defense, which ranked a respectable 13th in yards allowed despite being constantly abandoned by the offense. The unit finished 4th against the run, and generated a decent pass-rush spearheaded by John Parrella’s team-high 7.0 sacks. The iconic Junior Seau remained a ferocious force, racking up 123 tackles to earn All-Pro honors. Behind him, safety Rodney Harrison flew around for a team-high 127 tackles, 6.0 sacks, and 6 interceptions. Sadly, elite run defense could not save a group that ranked 29th in points allowed conceding 440 (27.5 ppg) due to constant short fields.
The schedule was a brutal sequence of heartbreaks and blowouts. The low point came in Week 5 against the St. Louis Rams, a 57-31 track meet where the defense surrendered 614 yards. However, the only point of relief within the season arrived in Week 13. The Chargers squeaked out a 17-16 win against the rival Kansas City Chiefs, courtesy of a stout defensive performance that held KC to 161 yards. It was the lone celebration in a sea of misery, as San Diego closed with four straight losses.
Missing the postseason was a foregone conclusion, leaving this squad with a dark legacy as one of the worst teams ever. While Junior Seau and punter Darren Bennett salvaged pride with Pro Bowl nods, the season is remembered as the end of the Leaf era. This miserable campaign served as the rock bottom of the era, forcing an organizational reset that netted LaDainian Tomlinson and Drew Brees the next spring. It remains a cautionary tale of what happens when anemic offenses and quarterback carousels collide.
