Season Review
San Diego Chargers 2012
The 2012 San Diego Chargers entered the year under immense pressure, with head coach Norv Turner fighting for his job. Management signed free agents Robert Meachem, Eddie Royal, and Ronnie Brown, while drafting linebacker Melvin Ingram to spark a resurgence. Instead, the campaign devolved into a frustrating 7-9 finish, placing second in the AFC West and missing the postseason entirely. It was a year defined by late-game collapses, ultimately spelling the end of the Turner era. The franchise could no longer mask its structural flaws, as the talent pool that once made them a perennial powerhouse had clearly evaporated.
The offense sputtered, finishing 31st in total yards and 20th in points (21.9 ppg). Philip Rivers passed for 3,606 yards and 26 touchdowns, but threw 15 interceptions and was sacked 49 times behind a porous line. The ground game offered no relief, ranking 27th in rushing yards as Ryan Mathews averaged just 3.8 yards per carry for 707 yards. Through the air, Malcom Floyd led the team with 814 receiving yards, while Danario Alexander provided seven touchdowns in ten games. Tight end Antonio Gates remained a reliable weapon with seven scores, but the unit lacked vertical explosiveness, turning into an inefficient, check-down heavy group.
John Pagano's defense kept the Chargers competitive, finishing 9th in total yards allowed and 16th in points surrendered, conceding 21.9 ppg. The unit excelled against the run, ranking 6th in the league by allowing just 1,542 yards. Safety Eric Weddle was the heartbeat of the secondary, racking up 97 tackles and three interceptions. Up front, Corey Liuget enjoyed a breakout year with 7.0 sacks, while Shaun Phillips anchored the pass rush with a team-high 9.5 sacks. Cornerback Quentin Jammer added three interceptions for an opportunistic group that forced 28 turnovers, but they were consistently undercut by an inept offense.
The defining moment came in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos. Leading 24-0 at halftime on Monday Night Football, San Diego suffered an epic meltdown, turning the ball over six times to lose 35-24. That collapse triggered a stretch where the Chargers lost six of the next seven games, including an agonizing 16-13 overtime loss to Baltimore. Missing the playoffs for the third straight season prompted the firings of Turner and general manager A.J. Smith. Safety Eric Weddle earned Second-Team All-Pro honors, but the season marks the definitive, crashing end to a once-promising era of Chargers football.
