Season Review
San Diego Chargers 2009
The 2009 San Diego Chargers entered the season carrying the heavy burden of perennial underachievers who possessed championship-caliber rosters but lacked the killer instinct to finish the job. Under head coach Norv Turner, the Chargers shrugged off a mediocre 2-3 start to capture the AFC West crown with a stellar 13-3 record. Offseason acquisitions like linebacker Kevin Burnett added depth, while rookie guard Louis Vasquez fortified an offensive front tasked with protecting the franchise centerpiece. San Diego eventually locked up the number two seed in the AFC, generating massive Super Bowl expectations before another confounding postseason exit derailed their championship aspirations.
Philip Rivers officially ascended to elite status in 2009, commanding a balanced, high-octane offensive attack that finished fourth in the league by scoring 454 total points at an average of 28.4 per contest. Rivers was a model of efficiency, throwing for 4,254 yards and 28 touchdowns against just nine interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl nod and a third-place finish in the NFL MVP voting. His primary targets, wide receiver Vincent Jackson and tight end Antonio Gates, both surpassed the 1,100-yard milestone, with Jackson racking up 1,167 yards and Gates adding 1,157 yards. Though legendary running back LaDainian Tomlinson managed only 730 rushing yards at a meager 3.3 yards per carry, he was still a threat in the red zone with 12 rushing touchdowns, while change-of-pace back Darren Sproles contributed 343 rushing yards and 497 receiving yards.
Defensively, the Chargers functioned as an opportunistic, bend-but-don't-break unit that finished 11th in the league by surrendering 320 points (20.0 ppg). Outside linebacker Shaun Phillips ignited the pass rush with a team-high 7.0 sacks and seven forced fumbles, while a recovering Shawne Merriman chipped in 4.0 sacks over 14 starts. Inside linebacker Stephen Cooper anchored the middle of the field, leading the roster with 102 combined tackles. The secondary featured premium physical talents in cornerbacks Quentin Jammer and Antonio Cromartie, who recorded three interceptions apiece, helping insulate a defensive unit that finished a respectable 11th in passing yards allowed despite ranking 20th in rushing yards surrendered.
After a frustrating October 19 home loss to the division-rival Denver Broncos dropped them to 2-3, San Diego orchestrated a dramatic midseason turnaround. The Chargers ignited an incredible 11-game winning streak to close out the regular season, a tear that began with a 37-7 blowout of the Kansas City Chiefs and featured crucial road victories against the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. The absolute peak of this regular-season surge occurred during a dominant late-season stretch where they dismantled the Broncos 32-3 and scored 40-plus points in against the Chiefs and Tennessee Titans, establishing San Diego as the hottest team in football entering January.
However, the legacy of this 2009 squad will forever be defined by a shocking 17-14 AFC Divisional round collapse against the underdog New York Jets. The primary culprit was reliable Pro Bowl kicker Nate Kaeding, who had missed just three field goals all season but went an unfathomable 0-for-3 in the playoff defeat, while Rivers threw two costly interceptions. Despite boasting individual accolades - including first-team All-Pro honors for Kaeding, second-team honors for Gates, and Pro Bowl selections for Rivers, Jackson, and special teams ace Kassim Osgood - this 13-3 juggernaut became the prime example of the teams inability to close in the playoffs despite all their regular season success. The season marked the symbolic end of the Rivers-Tomlinson championship window in San Diego.
