Season Review
San Diego Chargers 2006
The 2006 San Diego Chargers entered the season carrying immense expectations under veteran head coach Marty Schottenheimer, officially handing the keys to first-year starting quarterback Philip Rivers. The Bolts steamrolled the NFL, cruising to a franchise-best 14-2 record to secure the AFC West crown and the top overall seed. San Diego became an absolute juggernaut, blending a historic offense with a punishing defense. Free-agent additions like safety Marlon McCree and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna integrated seamlessly. They finished the regular season as undisputed championship favorites, executing a physical brand of football to near-perfection.
Offensively, the Chargers led the NFL with 492 points (30.8 ppg) scored while finishing fourth in total yards. Everything revolved around running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who delivered arguably the greatest offensive season ever, racking up 1,815 rushing yards and a record-breaking 28 rushing touchdowns. Aided by fullback Lorenzo Neal and rookie tackle Marcus McNeill, Tomlinson added three receiving scores for 31 total touchdowns. This ground game alleviated pressure on Rivers, who threw for 3,388 yards and 22 touchdowns. Tight end Antonio Gates served as his top target, securing 924 yards and nine touchdowns.
San Diego's defense was equally terrifying, ranking seventh in points allowed (18.9 ppg) and tenth in total yards. The unit was fueled by a ferocious pass rush spearheaded by Shawne Merriman, who tallied an incredible 17.0 sacks in just 12 games, and Shaun Phillips, who chipped in 11.5 sacks. Nose tackle Jamal Williams anchored the interior, allowing linebacker Donnie Edwards to accumulate a team-high 143 tackles. In the secondary, Quentin Jammer locked down wideouts and snatched four interceptions. This defense bullied quarterbacks and suffocated running games, making the Chargers an absolute nightmare to game-plan against.
The regular season was defined by an unstoppable ten-game winning streak to close out the schedule, highlighted by explosive performances where the Chargers routinely eclipsed 40 points against rivals like Cincinnati and Denver. A pivotal turning point occurred in November against the Broncos, where San Diego erased a 14-point deficit on the road to assert dominance over the division. Their only regular-season slip-ups were narrow road losses to Baltimore and Kansas City. By December, the Bolts looked completely invincible, wrapping up a perfect 8-0 home record at Qualcomm Stadium.
Yet, the ultimate tragedy remains their agonizing 24-21 divisional round playoff collapse against the New England Patriots, remembered for McCree's late fumble following an interception. The heartbreaking defeat cost Schottenheimer his job despite the 14-win season. However, their legacy remains secure, highlighted by Tomlinson capturing the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. Draft picks like Antonio Cromartie gave a glimpse into the future, but this squad remains legendary for their regular season play, defined by a historic run that represented the apex of the franchise.
