Season Review
San Diego Chargers 2008
The 2008 San Diego Chargers season was a wild, logic-defying ride that felt like a Hollywood script rewritten three different times. Coming off an AFC Championship appearance, expectations under head coach Norv Turner were Super Bowl-or-bust. Instead, the Chargers spent most of the autumn stepping on rake after rake, limping out to a 4-8 record by late November. But the AFC West was a bad comedy of errors that year, leaving the door cracked open. San Diego took full advantage by closing out the year on a four-game winning streak to finish 8-8, miraculously stealing the division crown from Denver on the final night of the regular season.
While the team record was average, the offense was an absolute juggernaut that carried this team kicking and screaming into January. San Diego boasted the league’s second-ranked scoring offense by lighting up scoreboard operators for 439 points at an average of 27.4 per game. Philip Rivers officially arrived as an elite franchise quarterback, throwing for 4,009 yards and leading the NFL with 34 passing touchdowns against just 11 interceptions. He relied heavily on massive perimeter targets, as Vincent Jackson racked up 1,098 receiving yards at a lofty 18.6 yard per reception and Antonio Gates caught eight touchdowns and added 704 yards. Meanwhile, legendary running back LaDainian Tomlinson gutted through injuries to compile 1,110 rushing yards and 11 scores, proving he could still move the chains even when the rushing attack dipped to 20th in the league.
On the other side of the ball, the defense was an adventure, to put it politely. The unit finished a dismal 25th in total yards allowed and gave up 347 points (21.7 ppg) on the year. They were completely derailed by a Week 1 knee injury to superstar linebacker Shawne Merriman, which essentially erased their consistent pass rush. Linebacker Shaun Phillips did his best to plug the leak by leading the squad with 7.5 sacks, while safety Eric Weddle recorded a team-high 127 combined tackles. The secondary got plenty of practice because opponents were constantly throwing to keep up with Rivers, resulting in cornerback Quentin Jammer defending 19 passes and rookie Antoine Cason flashing talent with two interceptions.
If you want to pinpoint where this season shifted from disaster to fairy tale, look no further than December. After a painful 22-16 loss to Atlanta dropped them four games under .500, Turner’s squad woke up. They absolutely demolished Oakland 34-7 on a Thursday night, escaped Kansas City by a single point, and handled Tampa Bay on the road. It all set up a monumental Week 17 winner-take-all showdown at home against the rival Denver Broncos. With the AFC West title on the line, the Chargers utterly humiliated Denver 52-21, riding a 289-yard rushing explosion to complete an unbelievable comeback and clinch a playoff berth.
In the postseason, the Chargers kept the magic alive for one more week, upsetting Peyton Manning and the heavily favored Indianapolis Colts 23-17 in an overtime Wild Card thriller, sparked by a heroic 150-scrimmage-yard performance from Darren Sproles. Their run finally ended the following week in a 35-24 Divisional round loss to the eventual champion Steelers in Pittsburgh. Ultimately, the 2008 Chargers rode a rollercoaster of a season to be one of the few teams to reach the playoffs with an 8-8 record. Rivers’ phenomenal efficiency earned him some MVP votes, and while they fell short of a title, their furious December rally remains a great escape fans fondly remember.
