Season Review
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2024
The 2024 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season was a high-scoring campaign that saw the franchise solidify its dominance in the division under head coach Todd Bowles. Building on the previous year's success, the Buccaneers achieved a 10-7 regular-season record, capturing their fourth consecutive NFC South division title. The team relied on an elite, top-tier offense alongside crucial contributions from an impact rookie class that featured first-round center Graham Barton, running back Bucky Irving, and defensive back Tykee Smith. Despite facing a brutal midseason slump burdened by tough losses, Tampa Bay orchestrated a spectacular late-season surge to punch their ticket back to the postseason, where their vibrant run ultimately met a highly competitive, bittersweet conclusion.
Offensively, the Buccaneers evolved into one of the most explosive, elite juggernauts in the NFL, finishing 4th in the league in scoring with 502 total points (29.5 ppg) and 3rd in total yards (6,793). Quarterback Baker Mayfield put together an absolute masterpiece of a season, commanding the offense to secure Pro Bowl honors while completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards and a league-leading 41 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. The passing attack operated at a premier level, heavily supported by vertical weapons on the outside. On the ground, the multi-faceted run game drastically improved to rank 4th in total rushing yards (2,536), averaging an elite 5.3 yards per attempt. Rookie center Graham Barton anchored the interior of the line seamlessly, providing stellar pocket protection and opening massive rushing lanes that frequently overwhelmed opposing fronts.
Defensively, the unit operated with an aggressive, bending-but-not-breaking architecture under Bowles' direction, finishing 16th in scoring defense by allowing 385 points at an average of 22.6 per game. The defense specialized in punishing opposing run games, ranking 4th in the NFL by holding opponents to just 1,663 rushing yards. In the secondary, newly signed free agent Jordan Whitehead brought physical, veteran leadership back to the backfield, while rookie safety Tykee Smith quickly established himself as a dynamic, impactful ball-hawk. However, the defense was continuously tested through the air, finishing 29th in passing yards allowed (4,147) and struggling at times to get off the field against elite passing attacks. Despite those aerial vulnerabilities, the defense remained somewhat opportunistic, generating 18 total turnovers and executing crucial red-zone stands.
The schedule featured extreme multi-game streaks, dramatic shootouts, and significant regular-season milestones. The Buccaneers exploded out of the gate with a 2-0 start, highlighted by a gritty 20-16 road victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 2. In Week 6, they put together a historic offensive showcase, dropping a magnificent 51-27 victory on the New Orleans Saints - a game in which they accumulated 594 yards of offense. Following that peak, the team plummeted into a devastating four-game losing skid heading into their Week 11 bye, dropping high-scoring, narrow heartbreakers to elite opponents like the Baltimore Ravens (41-31), Atlanta Falcons (31-26), and Kansas City Chiefs (30-24 in overtime). Refusing to break, the Buccaneers completely flipped the script in the winter, closing out the regular season on an absolute tear by winning six of their final seven games—including a 40-17 blowout of the Los Angeles Chargers and a 48-14 throttling of the Carolina Panthers.
Entering the postseason as the No. 4 seed, the Buccaneers hosted a highly anticipated Wild Card Round rematch against the Washington Commanders at Raymond James Stadium. In a fierce, hard-fought defensive battle, the Buccaneers fought valiantly behind Mayfield's leadership but ultimately fell just short, suffering a heartbreaking 23-20 loss to end their campaign. Despite the abrupt playoff exit, the 2024 season stood as a monumental success for the franchise, proving that their offensive framework is engineered to remain a highly competitive force in the NFL for years to come.
