Season Review

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2021

The 2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season was a highly competitive campaign that saw the franchise defend its crown with a dominant regular season. Entering the third and final season under head coach Bruce Arians, general manager Jason Licht pulled off an unprecedented offseason feat, using creative cap management to retain all 22 starters from their Super Bowl LV championship roster. Bolstered by first-round edge-rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and third-round offensive lineman Robert Hainsey, the veteran-heavy roster lived up to billing. The Buccaneers went 13-4, clinching the NFC South division title for the first time since 2007 and breaking the franchise record for regular-season victories. Despite high hopes of achieving a back-to-back championship run, injuries eventually took a heavy toll, ending their title defense in a dramatic, last-second postseason heartbreak.

Offensively, the Buccaneers operated as the most explosive machine in the NFL. Future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady orchestrated a magnificent regular season, capturing second-team All-Pro honors while pacing the offense to elite heights. Through the air, wide receiver Mike Evans remained a premier touchdown machine, while Chris Godwin and tight end Rob Gronkowski served as highly reliable aerial targets before injuries began to compromise the depth chart. Protecting Brady was an elite, Pro Bowl-laden interior offensive line anchored by tackle Tristan Wirfs, guard Ali Marpet, and center Ryan Jensen. The multi-faceted offensive attack frequently overwhelmed opponents and ranked second in both points scored (30.1 ppg) and yards gained

Defensively, coordinator Todd Bowles deployed a physical, aggressive unit that specialized in punishing front-seven play and opportunistic turnovers. Pocket-collapsing linebacker Devin White and veteran edge rusher Shaquil Barrett - who lead the team with 10 sacks - both secured Pro Bowl nods as primary pass-rushing threats. Down low, defensive tackle Vita Vea anchored a stout interior run defense which conceded the third least rushing yards all season. In the backfield, safety Antoine Winfield Jr. emerged as an elite ball-hawk, while defensive back Mike Edwards had a career day in Week 2, picking off two passes and returning both for touchdowns to seal a victory against the Atlanta Falcons. However, the defense was continuously tested due to major injuries in the secondary, including an early-season dislocated elbow to cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting that forced the backfield into defensive rotations.

The schedule featured a gauntlet of primetime clashes, record streaks, and back-and-forth shootouts. The Buccaneers opened the year on a high note, defeating the Dallas Cowboys 31-29 in a thrilling Week 1 kickoff. A Week 3 loss to the Los Angeles Rams snapped an incredible 10-game winning streak that extended from the previous year, but the team quickly rebounded. They rattled off dominant victories over the Miami Dolphins (45-17) and Chicago Bears (38-3), while also outlasting the Buffalo Bills 33-27 in a Week 14 overtime classic. After suffering a frustrating 9-0 shutout loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 15, the Buccaneers closed out the regular season on a high-flying three-game win streak to firmly secure the #2 seed in the NFC playoffs.

The postseason journey began in dominant fashion at Raymond James Stadium, where the Buccaneers soundly defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 31-15 in the Wild Card Round. This set up a highly anticipated NFC Divisional Round rematch against the Los Angeles Rams. Trailing heavily in the second half, Brady engineered a signature, furious 24-point comeback to tie the game at 27-27 late in the fourth quarter. However, the secondary fell victim to a deep passing play in the final seconds, allowing the eventual Super Bowl champion Rams to kick a walk-off field goal and end the Buccaneers' season 30-27. The historic season stands as the conclusion of the short yet highly decorated Bruce Arians era in Tampa Bay.
