Season Review
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2006
Jon Gruden entered the 2006 campaign with high expectations after capturing the NFC South the previous year, but the wheels came off immediately in a miserable 4-12 campaign. Instead of contending, Tampa Bay collapsed to fourth place in the division, completely undone by an immediate 0-4 start. High-profile draft picks Davin Joseph and Jeremy Trueblood were inserted to fortify the offensive line, while free agent linebacker Jamie Winborn added depth, but these additions could not salvage a team plagued by injuries and staggering regression. The ultimate outcome was an early winter, leaving the Buccaneers far outside the postseason picture.
The offense was an absolute slog all year, finishing near the bottom of the NFL at 31st in points with a measly 211 (13.2 ppg) and 29th in total yards. After starting quarterback Chris Simms went 0-3 and suffered a serious spleen injury, rookie Bruce Gradkowski was thrown into the fire, laboring through 11 starts for 1,661 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The ground game vanished entirely as sophomore running back Cadillac Williams hit a sophomore slump, averaging a weak 3.5 yards per carry for 798 yards and a single touchdown. 35-year-old wideout Joey Galloway who defied age was the lone bright spot, racking up 1,057 yards and seven touchdowns.
Monte Kiffin's legendary defensive unit finally showed its age, slipping to 21st in points allowed (22.1 ppg) and 17th in total yards allowed. Defensive end Simeon Rice was limited to just eight games and two sacks, forcing Greg Spires, Dewayne White and Ellis Wyms to shoulder the pass rush with five sacks apiece. Still, the veteran pillars fought valiantly. Linebacker Derrick Brooks anchored the middle with 121 tackles and three interceptions, while cornerback Ronde Barber delivered 100 tackles and three interceptions, remarkably returning two of them for defensive touchdowns to prove he was still an elite playmaker in the secondary.
The season's lone moment of euphoria arrived in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles, when kicker Matt Bryant drilled a breathtaking, franchise-record 62-yard field goal as time expired to secure a 23-21 victory. Unfortunately, a seven-in-eight game losing streak immediately followed, highlighted by a 38-10 Thanksgiving blowout loss to Dallas. Missing the playoffs cemented this team's legacy as the definitive end of an era. While Barber and Brooks still earned Pro Bowl honors, the magic of the iconic 2002 championship core had evaporated, leaving Gruden with a total rebuilding project on his hands.
