Season Review
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014
The 2014 Tampa Bay Buccaneers entered the season with cautious optimism under new head coach Lovie Smith, who promised to revitalize the franchise with his signature Tampa 2 system. Offseason acquisitions like quarterback Josh McCown, defensive end Michael Johnson, and defensive backs Major Wright and Mike Jenkins were expected to provide veteran leadership. Instead, the season imploded into a historical disaster, culminating in a dismal 2-14 record and a last-place finish in the NFC South. The team struggled to find an identity on either side of the ball, routinely beating themselves with a horrendous 33 turnovers. Rather than fighting for a playoff spot in a remarkably weak division, Tampa Bay quickly tumbled to the bottom of the NFL standings, securing the worst overall record in the league and the dubious prize of the number one pick in the upcoming draft.
Offensively, the Buccaneers were an unmitigated mess, ranking 29th in points scored (17.3 ppg) and 30th in total yards. The decision to hand the starting quarterback job to the 35-year-old McCown backfired heavily, as he threw 14 interceptions against just 11 touchdowns while enduring 36 sacks across 11 starts. When backup Mike Glennon took over for five starts, the efficiency marginally improved, but the offense remained entirely one-dimensional. The ground game offered no relief, finishing 29th in rushing yards behind a sluggish committee of Doug Martin and Bobby Rainey. The sole bright spot of the entire unit was rookie wideout Mike Evans, the standout first-round draft pick who hauled in 68 receptions for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns. Alongside veteran Vincent Jackson, who quietly posted a 1,002-yard receiving season, Evans provided an explosive element in an otherwise stagnant, predictable passing game.
Lovie Smiths defense fared little better, ranking 25th in both points (25.6 ppg) and yards allowed as the roster struggled to grasp the schematic nuances of the Tampa 2. The pass defense was particularly vulnerable, ranking 28th in yards allowed through the air, completely offsetting a respectable run defense that allowed just 3.9 yards per carry. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was the lone elite force upfront, earning Pro Bowl honors by racking up 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss despite constant double teams. Linebacker Lavonte David flew around the field to record a team-high 146 combined tackles and four forced fumbles, while cornerback Johnthan Banks intercepted four passes. However, high-priced free agent Michael Johnson disappointed with just four sacks, and the secondary, missing injured veterans, failed to generate consistent stops or protect late-game leads.
Looking back at the schedule, the season was defined by embarrassing blowouts and agonizingly close collapses. The lowest point came early in Week 3, a nationally televised Thursday night massacre where the rival Atlanta Falcons utterly demolished the Buccaneers 56-14, exposing every flaw on the roster. Tampa Bay bounced back the very next week when Glennon engineered a shocking 27-24 upset over the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that momentum quickly vanished. The team plummeted and lost 11 of the next 12 games including overtime heartbreakers against the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings. A solitary Week 11 victory over the Washington Redskins provided a brief reprieve, but the Bucs finished the year on a dismal six-game slide, punctuated by a miserable 109-yard offensive performance against the Green Bay Packers in Week 16.
The 2014 Buccaneers missed the postseason by a mile, leaving behind a legacy defined by missed opportunities and structural rebuilding. Historically, this team joins the ranks of the franchises most forgettable squads, notable only for how quickly the Lovie Smith era derailed. No major individual accolades were brought home, though Mike Evans did finish third in the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year voting, hinting at a brighter future. The true significance of this painful 2-14 campaign was structural; by bottoming out so spectacularly, the Buccaneers secured the number one overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, granting management the ultimate asset to reset the franchise under center and begin erasing the memory of a wasted season.
