Season Review
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2004
The 2004 Tampa Bay Buccaneers completely bottomed out, finishing a dismal 5-11 and dead last in the NFC South just two years removed from their Super Bowl title. Head coach Jon Gruden tried to reload by signing a small army of veteran free agents, including running back Charli Garner, offensive tackle Todd Steussie, and legendary wideout Tim Brown. Instead, injuries and age exposed a roster teetering on the edge. A disastrous 0-4 start immediately sank any realistic playoff aspirations, turning the season into a grueling evaluation of the post-championship core.
Offensively, Gruden spent the year searching for answers after veteran Brad Johnson went 0-4 as a starter. Brian Griese eventually took over and provided a major spark, slinging 2,632 yards and 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions while finishing with a 97.5 passer rating. Griese heavily targeted sensational rookie wide receiver Michael Clayton, who put together a magnificent season with 80 receptions for 1,193 yards and seven touchdowns. Running back Michael Pittman carried the ground game with 926 rushing yards, but the offense lacked consistency, finishing 23rd in the league in scoring - at an average of 18.8 points per game - and 22nd in total yards.
While the offense sputtered, the Monte Kiffin-led defense remained a top-tier unit, fighting valiantly to finish 5th in total yards allowed and 9th in points allowed (19.0 ppg). Simeon Rice spearheaded the pass rush with 12.0 sacks, while Greg Spires chipped in 8.0 sacks of his own. Linebacker Derrick Brooks led the team with 137 combined tackles, and cornerback Ronde Barber lead the secondary with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries returned for touchdowns. Both Brooks and Barber earned Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors, proving that the legendary Tampa 2 core still had plenty of bite left.
The season was defined by frustrating near-misses and a handful of wild turning points. After the ugly 0-4 start, the Bucs showed life with a thrilling 34-31 shootout victory over the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9. They followed that up a few weeks later by completely shutting down the rival Atlanta Falcons in a 27-0 blowout in Week 13, pulling their record to 5-7 and giving fans a brief glimpse of hope. However, the momentum vanished instantly, as Tampa Bay collapsed down the stretch, losing their final four games to finish the year.
Missing the postseason entirely, the 2004 campaign served as a stark reminder of how quickly championship windows close in the modern free-agency NFL. The legacy of this squad resides in Clayton's superb rookie season and Griese's unexpected efficiency, which earned him seven votes for AP Comeback Player of the Year. It marked the definitive end of the initial Super Bowl era roster, forcing Gruden to realize that premier names on the back of jerseys do not mean anything without the overall roster depth to help them.
