Season Review
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2022
The 2022 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season was a turbulent and emotionally draining campaign that marked the definitive end of an iconic era for the franchise. Following Bruce Arians' retirement to the front office, defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was elevated to head coach. The offseason was completely upended by quarterback Tom Brady retiring and unretiring within 40 days, a decision that triggered a rush to sign veteran free agents like wideout Julio Jones, defensive lineman Akiem Hicks, and defensive backs Logan Ryan and Keanu Neal, alongside a trade for guard Shaq Mason. Despite high expectations, a severe rash of injuries - beginning with Pro Bowl center Ryan Jensen tearing his knee in training camp - crippled the team's cohesion. While the Buccaneers made history by winning the NFC South in consecutive seasons for the first time ever, they limped into the postseason with a losing 8-9 record before getting decisively eliminated.
Offensively, the team underwent a drastic decline under coordinator Byron Leftwich, plunging from 2nd in the league in scoring the previous year down to 25th with just 313 total points at an average of 18.4 ppg. The primary issue was an entirely broken, one-dimensional scheme; the Buccaneers finished dead last (32nd) in the NFL in every major rushing category, scraping together a low 76.9 yards per game and a mere five touchdowns on the ground. This forced a 45-year-old Tom Brady to pass at an unprecedented rate, setting NFL single-season records for completions (490) and attempts (733) while racking up 4,694 yards and 25 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Wideouts Chris Godwin (104 receptions, 1,023 yards) and Mike Evans (1,124 yards, six touchdowns) both crossed the 1,000-yard milestone, while rookie tight end Cade Otton stepped up to lead his position group with 42 catches. However, the offense routinely stalled in the red zone, leaving Brady with the first losing season of his 23-year career as a starter.
Defensively, Bowles' unit remained competitive but struggled with massive inconsistency, finishing 9th in total yards allowed and 13th in scoring defense (21.1 points per game). The front seven did an admirable job adapting after losing star pass rusher Shaquil Barrett to a season-ending Achilles injury, still managing to finish 9th in the league with 44 total sacks. Up front, defensive tackle Vita Vea - who managed 6.5 sacks - and veteran Akiem Hicks anchored the interior, aided by top draft pick Logan Hall. In the secondary, despite injuries to key veterans, Antoine Winfield Jr. and newly acquired safety Keanu Neal flew around the ball. However, the secondary lacked a true ball-hawking edge compared to previous years, sliding down to 26th in the league by securing just 10 total interceptions.
The regular season was a continuous roller coaster that featured painful multi-game slides salvaged only by late-game heroics. After a promising 2-0 start, the team collapsed, losing five of their next six games - including shocking upsets by the short-handed Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers. The low point arrived in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens, marking the first time Tom Brady lost three consecutive games since 2002. The team salvaged their postseason hopes in the winter via a signature, pulse-pounding fourth-quarter comebacks engineered by Brady, including a dramatic walk-off win against the Los Angeles Rams and a Monday night miracle over the New Orleans Saints. They officially clinched the division in Week 17 with a 30-24 victory over the Panthers, meaning their Week 18 loss to the Atlanta Falcons was merely a formality.
By entering the playoffs with an 8-9 record, the Buccaneers became only the fourth team in NFL history to qualify for the postseason with a losing record in a full season. Their playoff journey was short-lived, as they hosted the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round and were thoroughly dismantled in a 31-14 blowout, marking Brady's first career defeat against Dallas. The legacy of the 2022 Buccaneers is historically monumental, serving as the final chapter of Tom Brady's legendary professional football career before his permanent retirement in the following weeks. Offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs secured the roster's sole Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors, standing as a bright spot for a team that ultimately proved how severely injuries and a stagnant running game can capsize a championship-caliber roster.
