Season Review
Green Bay Packers 2017
The 2017 Green Bay Packers season was defined entirely by a single, catastrophic moment that altered the balance of power in the NFC North and snapped the franchise’s eight-year playoff streak. Entering the year with typical championship expectations under Mike McCarthy, the front office uncharacteristically active in free agency by signing tight ends Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks, guard Jahri Evans, and cornerback Davon House. Everything fell apart in Week 6 when a fractured collarbone sidelined their transcendent quarterback, forcing Green Bay into a grim survival mode. The team fought aggressively to stay afloat but ultimately stumbled to a 7-9 record, finishing a distant third in the division and missing the postseason for the first time since 2008.
Before his injury, Aaron Rodgers was operating at his usual MVP-caliber level, throwing for 1,675 yards and 16 touchdowns against just six interceptions across his seven starts. When he went down, the offense plummeted into an identity crisis under backup Brett Hundley, who threw more interceptions than touchdowns and finished with a limited 1,836 passing yards. Despite the passing game cratering to 25th in yards, wideout Davante Adams earned Pro Bowl honors by hauling in 74 catches for 885 yards and 10 scores. The silver lining emerged in a suddenly balanced backfield powered by rookies Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones, who combined for eight rushing scores to give the 21st-ranked scoring offense (20.0) a pulse.
Defensively, the Packers simply lacked the teeth to carry a compromised offense, finishing 22nd in yards allowed and 26th in points surrendered (24.0 ppg). While Mike Daniels anchored the interior to earn a Pro Bowl nod with five sacks and 10 tackles for loss, the unit struggled under the weight of an inconsistent secondary and an average pass rush. Outside linebacker Clay Matthews gave everything he had left in the tank, leading the team with 7.5 sacks, while Nick Perry chipped in seven of his own. Behind them, inside linebacker Blake Martinez was an absolute machine, racking up a massive 144 combined tackles, but the defense allowed 29 passing touchdowns on the year and ranked near the bottom of the league in defensive efficiency.
Everything about this campaign hinged on turning points and resilient streaks. Green Bay started a promising 4-1, capped by a thrilling 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys where Rodgers orchestrated a classic game-winning drive. After the devastating Week 6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Hundley managed to keep the team alive with a couple of dramatic overtime wins against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns. Rodgers made a dramatic, heroic return in Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers, but three interceptions in a 31-24 loss officially extinguished the playoff flame, leading to a miserable season-ending collapse with consecutive blowout losses to the Vikings and Detroit Lions.
Missing the playoffs carried significance for the franchise, serving as the catalyst for sweeping institutional changes that winter. It marked the definitive end of an era, resulting in the dismissal of long-time defensive coordinator Dom Capers and a restructuring of the front office. The legacy of the 2017 squad is a sobering reminder of how heavily the entire organization rested on the shoulders of number 12. Even in a lost year, the developmental snaps afforded to Aaron Jones and Davante Adams laid the foundations for the next great Packers offensive nucleus, but the season itself remains an exhausting exercise in ‘what if’ for Green Bay faithful.
