Season Review
Green Bay Packers 2015
The 2015 Green Bay Packers entered the season carrying typical championship expectations under Mike McCarthy, yet they finished with a modest 10-6 record and a second-place finish in the NFC North. Coming off an agonizing near-miss in the 2014 NFC Title game, Green Bay looked primed for another deep run after bursting out to a perfect 6-0 start. However, the season quickly mutated into a gritty, inconsistent grind rather than the offensive clinic fans had grown accustomed to. Despite losing their grip on the division crown to Minnesota in a Week 17 finale loss, the Packers managed to navigate their way back to the postseason as a Wild Card threat.
Offensively, the unit lacked its signature vertical explosiveness, languishing at 15th in points scored (23.0 ppg) and a shocking 23rd in total yards. Aaron Rodgers was still elite but forced to work twice as hard for every completion threw for 3,821 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only 8 interceptions. Rodgers leaned heavily on a returning James Jones as the teams lone consistent deep threat, who posted a team-high 890 yards - at a 17.8 yards per reception average - and 8 touchdowns, alongside Randall Cobb with 829 yards. The backfield deployment turned into a heavy, slow-plodding committee with Eddie Lacy handling 187 carries for 758 yards, while James Starks provided an aerial and ground safety valve with 993 yards from scrimmage.
While the offense sputtered, Dom Capers defense kept the ship afloat by ranking 12th in points allowed (20.2 ppg) and 15th in yards. The unit relied on a relentless pass rush fronted by the ageless Julius Peppers, who racked up a team-leading 10.5 sacks, and Clay Matthews, who chipped in 6.5 sacks while anchoring the inside linebacker spot. In the secondary, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix had a breakout sophomore campaign, racking up 100 combined tackles and 3 sacks. This defensive backbone was particularly stingy in the red zone and against the pass, keeping Green Bay competitive during long stretches of offensive stagnation.
The trajectory of the season pivoted dramatically after an unblemished 6-0 opening stretch. A brutal three-game losing streak starting in Week 8 against Denver and Carolina exposed structural flaws in the passing game, culminating in a shocking home loss to the Detroit Lions. The seasons turning point came in the Week 13 rematch at Detroit, where a miraculous 61-yard Miracle in Motown Hail Mary touchdown from Rodgers to tight end Richard Rodgers got their season back on track. Still, standard late-season regression hit hard with consecutive losses to Arizona and Minnesota to close the regular season.
In the playoffs, Green Bay rediscovered its rhythm temporarily by dispatching the Washington Redskins 35-18 in the Wild Card round. Their season ultimately concluded in Glendale during an unforgettable divisional round thriller, falling 26-20 to the Arizona Cardinals in overtime despite another spectacular game-tying Hail Mary by Rodgers to Jeff Janis. The legacy of the 2015 squad remains one of missed opportunities and friction, though it still produced four Pro Bowlers in Rodgers, Matthews, Peppers, and fullback John Kuhn, proving that even a flawed Packers team was still a heavyweight contender.
