Season Review
Green Bay Packers 2008
The 2008 Green Bay Packers season was built around one of the riskiest franchise handoffs in NFL history. After Brett Favre's theatrical departure, head coach Mike McCarthy officially handed the keys to 25-year-old Aaron Rodgers. Coming off a 13-3 year, Titletown expectations remained high, boosted by free agent Brandon Chillar and a draft class featuring Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley. Instead, the transition turned to constant late-game heartbreak. The Packers finished a disappointing 6-10, placing third in the NFC North and missing the playoffs. It was a year where statistical excellence masked a brutal inability to close, as Green Bay dropped seven games by four points or fewer.
Despite the ugly record, McCarthy's offense proved the future was blindingly bright, finishing 5th in points scored with 419 (26.2 ppg) and 8th in total yards. Aaron Rodgers was a revelation in his first year starting, throwing for 4,038 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions for a 93.8 passer rating. Rodgers unlocked an elite connection with Greg Jennings, who racked up 80 catches, 1,292 yards, and nine scores. Veteran Donald Driver chipped in 1,012 receiving yards, while Ryan Grant ground out 1,203 rushing yards on 312 carries. The blueprint for an elite offense was clearly there; they just lacked fourth-quarter finishing power.
While the offense hummed, the defense was a streaky unit that torpedoed the season. Green Bay allowed 380 points, ranking 22nd in scoring defense (23.8 ppg) and 20th in yards allowed. They struggled against the run, surrendering 4.6 yards per carry, but survived on pure opportunism. The Packers ranked 3rd in the league with 22 interceptions, led by the brilliant secondary duo of Charles Woodson and Nick Collins, who grabbed seven picks each. Collins returned three interceptions for touchdowns, while Woodson added two scores. Edge rusher Aaron Kampman provided teeth up front with 9.5 sacks, but the unit routinely broke down when it mattered most.
The schedule felt like a sequence of cruel psychological tests. It started cleanly with a 24-19 opening win over Minnesota and a 37-3 thrashing of rival Chicago in Week 11 to reach 5-5. Then, the team ran out of steam. Green Bay endured a soul-crushing five-game losing streak that buried their playoff hopes, highlighted by a 51-29 blowout loss to New Orleans and an agonizing 20-17 overtime defeat at Soldier Field. They finally stopped the bleeding in Week 17 by beating the winless Detroit Lions 31-21. It was a classic case of a young team that simply didn't yet know how to win close games.
Missing the postseason was a bitter pill, but history has been incredibly kind to this 2008 squad. This wasn't a standard 6-10 trainwreck; it was the essential, painful bridge to a golden era. Both Charles Woodson and Nick Collins earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors, establishing a defensive baseline that would soon peak. Most importantly, Rodgers proved he was a franchise savior capable of replacing an icon. The scars of these close 2008 losses directly forged the resilience of the roster that would hoist the Lombardi Trophy just two seasons later.
