Season Review
Green Bay Packers 1995
The 1995 season marked the official resurrection of the Green Bay Packers as an NFL powerhouse under head coach Mike Holmgren. Entering the year with rising expectations after three consecutive 9-7 playoff campaigns, the Packers claimed an 11-5 regular-season record to capture their first NFC Central Division title since 1972. General manager Ron Wolf reinforced the roster by bringing in veteran pass catchers Keith Jackson and Mark Ingram, signaling that Green Bay was ready to challenge the elite tier of the NFC. This squad ultimately advanced all the way to the NFC Championship Game, establishing a championship foundation for the rest of the decade.
Everything on offense revolved around the meteoric rise of quarterback Brett Favre, who captured his first career NFL Most Valuable Player award. Favre orchestrated Holmgren's sophisticated West Coast offense by completing 63.0 percent of his passes for 4,413 yards and a league-leading 38 touchdowns. With top weapon Sterling Sharpe forced into early retirement, wide receiver Robert Brooks stepped into the spotlight with a spectacular 102-catch, 1,497-yard campaign. Balanced by fullback Edgar Bennett's 1,067 rushing yards and the red-zone efficiency of Pro Bowl tight end Mark Chmura, the Packers engineered the NFL's sixth-highest scoring offense averaging 25.3 points per contest.
While the offense grabbed national headlines, Fritz Shurmur's defense was arguably even more imposing, finishing the regular season ranked fourth in points allowed (19.6 ppg). The defensive front was anchored by the legendary Reggie White, who earned first-team All-Pro honors while tearing through opposing lines for 12.0 sacks. Veteran defensive end Sean Jones provided stellar complementary pressure with 9.0 sacks of his own. In the back seven, strong safety LeRoy Butler led the team with 102 combined tackles and five interceptions, forming a cohesive unit with rookie cornerback Craig Newsome to smother opposing passing games.
An early turning point came in Week 2 on Monday Night Football when Favre connected with Brooks for a thrilling 99-yard touchdown pass to outlast the rival Chicago Bears 27-24. After a midseason stumble that dropped them to 5-4, the regular seasons defining moment arrived in a gritty Week 11 rematch against Chicago where an injured Favre threw for 336 yards in a crucial 35-28 victory. The Packers clinched the division title on Christmas Eve in a dramatic 24-19 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, sealed when a wide-open Steelers receiver dropped a potential game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds.
In the postseason, Green Bay dismantled the Atlanta Falcons 37-20 at Lambeau Field before heading west to shock the defending champion San Francisco 49ers 27-17 in the Divisional Round. Though their Super Bowl dreams were deferred by a hard-fought 38-27 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game, the legacy of the 1995 Packers remains immense. It re-established Green Bay as a premium NFL destination, kick-started Favre's historic run of three consecutive MVPs, and launched an NFL-record 25-game home winning streak at Lambeau Field.
