Season Review
Jacksonville Jaguars 2020
The 2020 Jacksonville Jaguars season was an unintentional demolition job, culminating in a dismal 1-15 record. Head coach Doug Marrone entered the year on a scorching hot seat, overseeing a roster completely hollowed out by the front office after the dismantling of the famous 2017 defense. Big-money free-agent linebacker Joe Schobert was brought in on a five-year, $53.8 million contract, alongside veteran targets like tight end Tyler Eifert and running back Chris Thompson, to inject life into a young roster. Instead, the year turned into a historic race to the bottom, ending with Marrone’s firing and a franchise-record 15-game losing streak.
On offense, the Jaguars were a disjointed mess that cycled through three different starting quarterbacks: Gardner Minshew II, Mike Glennon, and rookie Jake Luton. Minshew was the most efficient of the trio, throwing for 2,259 yards and 16 touchdowns against five interceptions in his nine games. The lone bright spot of the entire operation was undrafted rookie running back James Robinson, who defied his pedigree by racking up 1,070 rushing yards, 344 receiving yards, and 10 total touchdowns. Despite Robinson’s individual brilliance and wideout DJ Chark contributing 706 yards, the offense ranked 30th in points (19.1 ppg) and 28th in total yards. It was a unit that couldn't sustain drives, leaving a stripped-down defense completely exposed week after week.
Defensively, the statistics were completely horrifying as Jacksonville ranked 31st in both points and total yards allowed. Defensive coordinator Todd Wash simply did not have the personnel, especially after a core injury limited sophomore edge rusher Josh Hines-Allen to just eight games and 2.5 sacks. Joe Schobert held things together as best he could by posting a team-high 141 combined tackles, and linebacker Myles Jack chipped in 118 tackles. There were high hopes for the youth movement, including first-round cornerback C.J. Henderson and third-round defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton. However, Henderson suffered an injury midway through his rookie campaign, and the unit registered a pathetic 18 total sacks over 16 games while surrendered an average of 30.8 points per contest.
If you looked at the standings in mid-September, you would have thought 'Minshew Mania' was here to stay after a shocking 27-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1. That afternoon, Minshew threw three touchdowns and it looked like the Jaguars would at least be a feisty, competitive spoiler. But that victory proved to be the ultimate mirage, as the team went on to lose every single remaining game on the schedule. There were agonizing close calls, like a 33-30 shootout loss to the Tennessee Titans in Week 2 and an overtime heartbreak against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 13. However, the season ultimately dissolved into a complete collapse, marked by blowout losses of 40-14 to the Baltimore Ravens and 41-17 to the Chicago Bears in December.
By the time the final whistle blew on a season-ending loss to the Colts, the 2020 Jaguars secured an infamous legacy as the worst team in franchise history. Missing the playoffs was a foregone conclusion by October, but the significance of this 1-15 campaign was immense. By dropping 15 straight games, the Jaguars locked up the number one overall draft choice for the first time ever. It was a painful winter for fans in northeastern Florida, but the misery served a definitive purpose. The wreckage of 2020 completely reset the organization's timeline, guaranteeing them the chance to pick a foundational quarterback in the upcoming draft and closing the book on one of the most turbulent eras in franchise history.
