Season Review

Jacksonville Jaguars 1999

Entering the 1999 season, Tom Coughlin’s Jacksonville Jaguars carried championship expectations. Fortified by free-agent additions Carnell Lake, Gary Walker, and Kyle Brady, alongside rookie corner Fernando Bryant, they stormed to a franchise-best 14-2 record to capture the AFC Central title. Steamrolling opponents, they clinched the top seed in the AFC. Yet, their ultimate Super Bowl goal went unfulfilled, leaving this powerhouse as one of pro football’s most talented yet star-crossed juggernauts.

Jacksonville’s run-first offense finished sixth in points (24.8 ppg) and seventh in total yards. Left tackle Tony Boselli earned first-team All-Pro honors, anchoring a line that protected quarterback Mark Brunell, who threw for 3,060 yards and 14 touchdowns against nine interceptions. Wide receiver Jimmy Smith put up a legendary campaign with 116 catches for 1,636 yards, complemented by Keenan McCardell’s 891 yards. Rushing depth was lethal, as James Stewart logged 931 yards and 13 scores, while Fred Taylor added 732 yards.

The Jaguars fielded the NFL’s top-ranked scoring defense, finishing first in points allowed (13.6 ppg) and fourth in yards. Pass rusher Tony Brackens terrorized quarterbacks with 12.0 sacks and eight forced fumbles, while Gary Walker added 10.0 sacks. Linebacker Kevin Hardy earned All-Pro status with 96 tackles and 10.5 sacks. Cornerback Aaron Beasley intercepted six passes, returning two for scores, while safety Carnell Lake anchored the secondary to earn a Pro Bowl selection.

The regular season was defined by a bizarre statistical anomaly: Jacksonville went 14-0 against the rest of the NFL but 0-2 against division rival Tennessee. Following a 41-3 opening demolition of San Francisco, the Jaguars suffered a 20-19 heartbreaker to the Titans in Week 3. Coughlin’s squad then executed an 11-game winning streak, which was eventually snapped in Week 16 by a 41-14 blowout loss in Nashville.

In the playoffs, the Jaguars dismantled the Miami Dolphins 62-7 in a historic Divisional Round blowout featuring a 90-yard touchdown sprint by Fred Taylor. However, their kryptonite returned in the AFC Championship Game, where a brutal six-turnover collapse resulted in a season-ending 33-14 loss to Tennessee. Finishing 15-3 overall - with all three losses inflicted by the Titans - this legendary team remains the ultimate what-if.
