Season Review
Jacksonville Jaguars 2007
The 2007 Jacksonville Jaguars season was a masterclass in ground-and-pound football, delivering an 11-5 record and a second-place finish in a brutally competitive AFC South. Head coach Jack Del Rio made a high-stakes gamble just days before the opener, cutting former first-round quarterback Byron Leftwich to hand the car keys to David Garrard. Bolstered by free-agent additions like offensive tackle Tony Pashos, the Jaguars entered the year with low national buzz but high internal expectations. They ultimately smashed their way into the postseason as a wild card, proving that an old-school, smashmouth blueprint could still terrorize an increasingly pass-happy league.
Jacksonville’s offense was a highly efficient, run-heavy machine that ranked 6th in points (25.7 ppg) and 7th in total yards. David Garrard orchestrated the attack beautifully, throwing for 2,509 yards and 18 touchdowns while tossing just 3 interceptions all year, leading the NFL with a microscopic 0.9 percent interception rate. The crown jewel was a dynamic backfield duo. Veteran Fred Taylor rolled back the odometer for 1,202 rushing yards and a Pro Bowl selection, while second-year bowling ball Maurice Jones-Drew chipped in 768 yards and 9 scores on the ground alongside 407 receiving yards. Reggie Williams provided the vertical punch, snagging a team-high 10 touchdown passes to round out the unit that suffocated opponents by controlling the clock.
Defensively, the Jaguars leaned on raw power to finish 10th in points allowed (19.0 ppg) and 12th in yards surrendered. The identity started right in the trenches with the defensive tackle tandem of John Henderson and Marcus Stroud, who anchored a stout run defense. Defensive end Paul Spicer provided the primary edge rush with a team-high 7.5 sacks, while linebacker Daryl Smith flew around the second level to record 71 combined tackles. In the secondary, veteran safety Sammy Knight provided a steadying presence with 4 interceptions, while ball-hawking rookie first-round pick Reggie Nelson led the defense with 5 picks, making the Jaguars a nightmare to execute long drives against.
Jacksonville’s season was defined by a series of statement performances and grit. After a sluggish 10-13 opening day loss to the rival Tennessee Titans, the Jaguars caught fire, winning four straight games, including a dominant 37-17 win over the Houston Texans. A midseason turning point arrived in mid-December when they traveled to a snowy Heinz Field and handled the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-22, breaking a physical opponent on their own turf. Though they stumbled in the regular-season finale against Houston while resting key assets, an imposing 6-2 stretch over the final two months solidified them as the playoff team nobody wanted to match up against in January.
In the postseason, the Jaguars beat the Steelers at Heinz Field for a second time in a month, securing a thrilling 31-29 Wild Card victory behind a clutch, late-game fourth-down scramble by Garrard. Their run eventually hit a wall the following week in Foxborough, falling 20-31 to the undefeated New England Patriots. While the season ended without a ring, the 2007 squad left a lasting legacy as one of the most beloved teams in franchise history, defined by Fred Taylor’s resurgence and a style of physical football that perfectly captured the identity of the Jack Del Rio era.
