Season Review
Jacksonville Jaguars 1996
Look at what Tom Coughlin built in just his second year by the beach. Nobody, and I mean nobody, saw the 1996 Jacksonville Jaguars coming. After stumbling through their inaugural season, Coughlin stockpiled professional talent via free agency, locking down right tackle Leon Searcy, signing veteran linebacker Eddie Robinson, and grabbing wide receiver Keenan McCardell. Entering the year with modest expectations, the Jaguars scratched and clawed their way to a 9-7 record, finishing second in the brutal AFC Central. What looked like another building year rapidly turned into a historic, heart-stopping ride that concluded just one win shy of the Super Bowl.
This offense was a beautifully chaotic aerial circus orchestrated by Mark Brunell, who threw for a league-leading 4,367 yards while adding 396 yards on the ground. Jacksonville finished the regular season ranked second in total yards and fourteenth in points scored (20.3 ppg), anchored by an aggressively pass-heavy scheme that defenses simply could not decipher. Brunell formed a lethal partnership with McCardell, who hauled in 85 receptions for 1,129 yards, and Jimmy Smith, who emerged as a superstar with 83 catches for 1,244 yards. When they needed to keep defenses honest, running back James Stewart chipped in with 723 rushing yards and 8 scores, allowing Coughlin to maintain just enough balance to threaten teams vertically on any given snap.
Defensively, the Jaguars were more of a bend-but-dont-break operation, finishing nineteenth in points allowed (20.9 ppg) and fifteenth in total yards. Still, they possessed an elite baseline of young, foundational playmakers who rose to the occasion when everything was on the line. Rookie pass rusher Tony Brackens was an absolute terror, racking up 7.0 sacks and forcing 5 fumbles, while veteran defensive end Clyde Simmons anchored the frontline with a team-high 7.5 sacks. Behind them, rookie linebacker Kevin Hardy flew all over the field to record 86 tackles, giving this defensive unit a ferocious, high-energy identity that paired perfectly with their high-flying offensive counterparts.
If you love a good turning-point narrative, the 1996 Jaguars are your gold standard. They sat at a miserable 4-7 following a blowout loss to Pittsburgh in mid-November, and it felt like the wheels were totally coming off. Then, something clicked. Brunell and company rattled off five consecutive wins to close out the regular season, including an overtime thriller against Baltimore and a tense 20-13 victory over Seattle. The wildest moment came in Week 17, when Atlanta kicker Morten Andersen missed a routine 30-yard field goal in the final seconds, gifting Jacksonville a 19-17 win and punching their improbable ticket to the postseason.
Once they got to January, the Jaguars played completely unburdened by history, turning into the ultimate playoff bracket-busters. They went up to Buffalo and knocked off Jim Kelly in his final game, 30-27, before pulling off one of the greatest upsets in NFL history by shocking the top-seeded Broncos in Denver by that exact same 30-27 scoreline. Though the magical run finally died in Foxborough with a 20-6 loss in the AFC Championship Game, this team fundamentally altered how we view expansion franchises. McCardell and Brunell earned Pro Bowl nods, Hardy and Brackens proved the future was bright, and the 1996 Jaguars established a legacy as the bravest, most resilient underdogs of the nineties.
