Season Review
New York Giants 2020
The 2020 New York Giants campaign was defined by a bizarre, pandemic-altered timeline and a comedy-of-errors NFC East division race where seemingly nobody actually wanted to take control. Entering the season under first-year head coach Joe Judge, expectations were modest, but a dismal 0-5 start seemed to lock in another lost year for Big Blue. Yet, because the division was historically putrid, the Giants remained alive until the final night of the regular season, finishing with a 6-10 record and securing second place in the division. Despite an offense that repeatedly sputtered out, Judge somehow engineered a highly competitive football team down the stretch that missed out on a division title by just a single game.
Offensively, the season was derailed almost immediately when star running back Saquon Barkley suffered a torn ACL in Week 2, leaving a huge hole in the backfield. Second-year quarterback Daniel Jones struggled to consistently move the chains, throwing for 2,943 yards with a meager 11 touchdowns against 10 interceptions across 14 starts. Wayne Gallman stepped in to provide a respectable ground presence with 682 rushing yards and six scores, while wide receiver Darius Slayton paced the perimeter with 751 receiving yards. Still, this unit ran entirely on fumes under coordinator Jason Garrett, ranking 31st in both total yards and points scored (17.5 ppg), relying far too heavily on kicker Graham Gano, who was excellent, converting 31 of 32 field goal attempts.
While the offense was stuck in first gear, coordinator Patrick Graham constructed a surprisingly fierce defense that finished 9th in the league in points allowed (22.3 ppg) and 12th in total yards. Free-agent linebacker Blake Martinez was a revelation, racking up 151 combined tackles, while cornerback James Bradberry earned a Pro Bowl nod by locking down opposing wideouts and breaking up 18 passes. The real muscle came from the interior line, where Leonard Williams enjoyed a massive breakout contract year, anchoring the pass rush with 11.5 sacks and 30 quarterback hits. Combined with sturdy contributions from nose tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and safety Logan Ryan, the defense kept the team afloat in nearly every single contest.
If you want to pinpoint the exact moment this season turned from a disaster into an intriguing football experiment, look at November and early December. Following an agonizing 25-23 Monday night defeat against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York rattled off a surprising four-game winning streak. The apex of this run was a stunning 17-12 upset over Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13, a game where backup quarterback Colt McCoy started. Just as quickly as momentum built, three consecutive losses to the Cardinals, Browns, and Ravens pulled the team right back down to earth, illustrating their incredibly thin margin for error.
The final week provided a perfect capsule of the 2020 Giants saga: they took care of business by outlasting the Dallas Cowboys 23-19 to keep their postseason hopes mathematically alive. Tight end Evan Engram, despite an inconsistent year with a low targets vs catch ratio, made the Pro Bowl alongside Bradberry, but individual accolades could not mask the final blow when Washington won later that Sunday to secure the East. Historically, this squad remains a fascinating footnote - a team that fielded a top-ten defense and almost snuck into January football despite scoring only 280 points all season.
