Season Review
New York Giants 1997
Nobody saw the 1997 New York Giants coming. Coming off a dismal 6-10 campaign, the franchise handed the keys to new head coach Jim Fassel, who injected immediate optimism into a locker room starved for direction. Despite low external expectations and a glaring lack of explosive offensive weapons, Fassel engineered one of the most surprising turnarounds in franchise history, guiding the team to a 10-5-1 regular season record. New York shocked the league by capturing the NFC East division title, completely resetting the trajectory of the franchise after years of post-Parcells mediocrity.
To say the offense was conservative would be a massive understatement, as it ranked 21st in points scored with 307 (19.2 ppg) and a lowly 27th in total yards. Fassel leaned on a committee approach at quarterback, starting Dave Brown for six games before turning the offense over to sophomore signal-caller Danny Kanell, who managed 1,740 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions across 10 starts. The heavy lifting fell upon fullback Charles Way, who racked up a team-high 1,002 yards from scrimmage, and wide receiver Chris Calloway, who dragged the passing game forward with 58 receptions for 849 yards and 8 touchdowns. Meanwhile, rookie running back Tiki Barber provided glimpses of his future stardom, chipping in 511 rushing yards.
While the offense ground out yards, the defense cracked heads, finishing the regular season ranked 3rd in points allowed by giving up just 265 points (16.6 ppg). This unit was anchored by defensive end Michael Strahan, who asserted himself as an elite pass rusher by terrorizing opposing quarterbacks to the tune of 14.0 sacks. On the back end, cornerback Jason Sehorn blossomed into a premier shutdown defensive back, pulling down a team-high 6 interceptions, while safety Tito Wooten added 5 interceptions of his own. The defense specialized in completely taking away the deep ball, ranking 1st in the NFL by allowing only 10 passing touchdowns all year.
New York’s season was full of swings that truly began after a brutal 1-3 start, capped by an ugly 13-3 loss to the St. Louis Rams. The turning point arrived immediately after, as the Giants rattled off a crucial five-game winning streak that included a gutsy 20-17 victory over the rival Dallas Cowboys. Fassel coached his best ball in December, rallying his squad to three straight wins against the Philadelphia Eagles, Redskins, and Cowboys to close out the year and lock up the division.
Though the regular season was a triumph, the postseason brought heartbreak in the NFC Wild Card Game against the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants held a commanding nine-point lead late in the fourth quarter, but a catastrophic sequence of a late touchdown, a recovered onside kick, and a last-second field goal handed them a crushing 23-22 defeat. Despite the collapse, the season’s legacy remains immensely positive. Jim Fassel took home NFL Coach of the Year honors for orchestrating the turnaround, Michael Strahan and linebacker Jessie Armstead earned first-team All-Pro nods, and the foundation was officially poured for the team’s eventual Super Bowl run three years later.
