Season Review
New York Giants 2018
The 2018 New York Giants season was another frustrating season, finishing last in the NFC East with a 5-11-0 record. Coming off a three-win campaign, the franchise hired Pat Shurmur as head coach to salvage the twilight of Eli Manning’s career. General manager Dave Gettleman signed left tackle Nate Solder to stabilize the line, alongside veterans like Jonathan Stewart and Kareem Martin. Instead of a turnaround, the season became a series of single-possession heartbreaks. The Giants routinely imploded late, dropping eight games by seven points or fewer and missing the playoffs for the second straight year.
Offensively, rookie sensation Saquon Barkley single-handedly made the Giants watchable. Barkley racked up 1,307 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, adding 91 receptions for 721 yards. Eli Manning started all 16 games, throwing for 4,299 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, though he was plagued by 47 sacks behind a shaky line. When healthy, Odell Beckham Jr. remained electric, hauling in 77 passes for 1,052 yards in 12 games. Shurmur’s offense finished 16th in points with 369 (23.1 ppg), flashing elite skill-position talent but lacking the upfront blocking consistency to sustain winning football.
New York’s defense was a leaky ship that doomed postseason aspirations, ranking 23rd in the league by surrendering 412 points (25.8 ppg). The unit lacked a consistent pass rush, relying on Olivier Vernon, who had 7.0 sacks in 11 games to earn a Pro Bowl nod, and rookie B.J. Hill’s 5.5 sacks. Linebacker Alec Ogletree led the team with five interceptions, while safety Landon Collins secured a Pro Bowl selection with 96 tackles. However, the defense finished 23rd in passing yards allowed, repeatedly failing to hold late leads when it mattered most.
The season was defined by a brutal 1-7 start that buried the team by October, highlighted by a heartbreaking Week 5 defeat to Carolina on a 63-yard field goal. After the bye, the team found a brief second-half spark, winning four of five games. This stretch included a thrilling 30-27 overtime victory over the Chicago Bears and a 40-16 demolition of Washington. However, the team returned to thier true form in Week 15 with a 17-0 shutout loss to Tennessee, followed by consecutive one-point defeats against Indianapolis and Dallas to close the year.
Finishing 5-11 meant another missed postseason, but the year left an enduring legacy with the spectacular arrival of Saquon Barkley, who captured the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Safety Michael Thomas also earned a Pro Bowl nod for his standout play. This campaign marked one of the final full chapters of Eli Manning’s iconic Giants career. The 2018 Giants are remembered as a highly entertaining but deeply flawed group, whose premier skill-position weapons were fatally undermined by an incapable line and late-game defensive collapses.
