Season Review

New York Giants 2012

The 2012 New York Giants season entered with the massive expectations that naturally befit a reigning Super Bowl champion, but it ultimately devolved into a frustrating tale of missed opportunities. Head coach Tom Coughlin welcomed a few notable veteran additions to his squad, signing tight end Martellus Bennett, defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, and offensive lineman Sean Locklear, while adding receiver Rueben Randle via the draft. Despite navigating a highly competitive NFC East, the Giants finished with a 9-7 record, placing second in the division. While a 9-7 record sufficed for a spectacular championship run the prior year, the 2012 campaign offered no such January magic, as a late-season collapse left the G-Men entirely outside the postseason bubble.

Offensively, coordinator Kevin Gilbride deployed a balanced approach that leaned heavily on Eli Manning under center. Manning earned a Pro Bowl nod, throwing for 3,948 yards and 26 touchdowns, though his efficiency suffered slightly from 15 interceptions. The aerial attack flowed primarily through dynamic wideout Victor Cruz, who hauled in 86 catches for 1,092 yards and 10 touchdowns, while Hakeem Nicks chipped in 692 yards across 13 games. Bennett proved to be an immediate asset, contributing 626 yards and five scores. The ground game relied on the physical running style of Ahmad Bradshaw, who ground out 1,015 rushing yards. This balanced firepower allowed New York to rank sixth in the league in scoring offense with 429 points (26.8 ppg), though they rested at 14th in total yards.

Conversely, the Giants defense spent the year trying to mask major vulnerabilities, surrendering 6,134 total yards to rank a dismal 31st in the NFL. Despite giving up immense yardage, the unit placed 12th in points allowed with 344 (21.5 ppg) by relying on a highly opportunistic secondary. Safety Stevie Brown emerged as a premier ball-hawk, registering eight interceptions and 307 return yards, while cornerback Corey Webster added four picks. Up front, the pass rush lacked its historic, game-wrecking consistency, but Jason Pierre-Paul still secured a Pro Bowl invite with 6.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Defensive end Osi Umenyiora added six sacks, and linebacker Chase Blackburn paced the team with 98 combined tackles to shore up an otherwise leaky defensive front.

Tracing the trajectory of the season reveals a wild ride that peaked just before Halloween. Following a sluggish opening night loss to Dallas, New York caught fire, ripping off a four-game winning streak in October highlighted by a 41-27 shootout over Cleveland and a dominant 26-3 road victory against the San Francisco 49ers. Sitting pretty at 6-2, the season unceremoniously feel apart in November during a brutal stretch that included a disappointing 31-13 loss to Cincinnati. The defining turning point came in December; after obliterating the Saints 52-27, the Giants suffered consecutive deflating blowout losses on the road against Atlanta and Baltimore by a combined score of 67-14, effectively crushing their playoff aspirations.

Missing the playoffs just one year after hoisting the Lombardi Trophy permanently cements the 2012 Giants as a classic example of championship hangover. Rookie running back David Wilson provided a rare bright spot for the team in regards to individual accomplishments, earning Second-Team All-Pro honors primarily due to his explosive kickoff return capabilities, which included a 97-yard touchdown return. Ultimately, the season is a good example of how a high-scoring offense can be thoroughly undermined by a bottom-tier defense when the late-season pressure intensifies.
