Season Review

Arizona Cardinals 2022

The 2022 Arizona Cardinals campaign stands as a stark realization of organizational dysfunction, ending in a dismal 4–13 record that placed them last in the NFC West. Entering the year with high expectations following a 2021 playoff appearance, the team instead suffered a disastrous late-season collapse, closing the year with seven consecutive losses and matching a franchise record for single-season defeats. The season was defined by pervasive off-field drama, ranging from a deteriorating relationship between quarterback Kyler Murray and head coach Kliff Kingsbury to a six-game suspension for star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. The organizational turmoil ultimately led to the firing of both Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim immediately following the conclusion of the regular season.

On the offensive side, the unit struggled significantly, ranking 21st in points scored with 340 at an average of 20.0 per game. Kyler Murray, limited to 11 games due to injury, recorded 2,368 passing yards with 14 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, while also contributing 418 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. James Conner remained a reliable force in the backfield, rushing for 782 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 appearances. Despite these efforts, the offense was hampered by injuries and inconsistency, failing to sustain the high-flying production seen in previous years.

Defensively, the team struggled mightily, ranking 31st in points allowed conceding 26.4 points per game. In what would be his final season, veteran J.J. Watt served as a lone standout, recording a team-leading 12.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss, earning end-of-season recognition with some votes for comeback player of the year for his dominant performance. Despite the presence of core players like Budda Baker, who earned Pro Bowl honors, and Jalen Thompson, the defense was unable to provide the necessary stability to keep the team competitive in close games throughout the grueling schedule.

Key moments were few and far between during a season plagued by frustration. A Week 2 overtime victory against the Las Vegas Raiders and a Week 7 high-scoring 42-34 win against the New Orleans Saints were brief highlights, but they were overshadowed by lopsided defeats and the aforementioned late-season slide. The team's inability to win at home, winning only once at State Farm Stadium since Week 8 of the previous season, further solidified the 2022 season as one of the most disappointing in franchise history.
