Season Review
Arizona Cardinals 2019
The 2018 debacle yielded the number one overall pick, which general manager Steve Keim used to completely reboot the franchise. Enter Kliff Kingsbury, an offensive guru poached from college, and Kyler Murray, the electrifying quarterback tasked with saving desert football. Arizona radically reshaped the roster, adding veterans like Jordan Hicks and Terrell Suggs while drafting Byron Murphy and Zach Allen. The result was a wildly entertaining 5-10-1 campaign that kept them in the NFC West basement but injected genuine hope back into the fanbase. The 'Air Raid' experiment had landed in the NFL, transforming a broken team into a watchable spoiler.
Kingsbury’s offense was a shot of adrenaline, jumping to 16th in scoring with 361 points (22.6 ppg). Murray was a spectacular dual-threat engine, throwing for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns while adding 544 rushing yards. After David Johnson struggled, mid-season trade acquisition Kenyan Drake ignited the backfield, exploding for 643 rushing yards and 8 scores in just eight games. On the perimeter, the ageless Larry Fitzgerald defied father time again, leading the team with 75 catches for 804 yards, while Christian Kirk blossomed into a reliable weapon with 709 receiving yards.
If the offense was a glimpse into the future, the defense was a grim reminder of the present. Arizona was an absolute sieve, ranking dead last in total yards allowed (6,432) and 28th in points surrendered - allowing 442 at an average of 27.6 per game. Despite the collective bleeding, Chandler Jones provided a brilliant individual masterpiece. The edge rusher was an unblockable nightmare, racking up 19.0 sacks and 8 forced fumbles to finish second in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Jordan Hicks anchored the middle with 150 tackles, while safety Budda Baker earned a Pro Bowl nod with 147 stops, but the young secondary was frequently exposed.
The Cardinals’ schedule was a rollercoaster of close calls, encapsulating a young team learning how to finish. They opened the era with a 27-27 overtime tie against the Detroit Lions, erasing an 18-point deficit. Arizona teased a playoff push by rattling off three consecutive October victories against Cincinnati, Atlanta, and the Giants. However, the grueling NFC West caught up to them, triggering a brutal six-game losing streak. They finally found redemption in Week 16, marching into CenturyLink Field and handing the Seattle Seahawks a definitive 27-13 defeat that proved they could punch upward .
Finishing 5-10-1 meant missing the postseason again, but the vibe was entirely different from the prior year. This was a foundational proof-of-concept for the Kingsbury-Murray marriage. Murray's spectacular debut earned him the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award, cementing his status as potential franchise savior. While the record remained sub-par, the 2019 Cardinals successfully established a new offensive identity and built legitimate momentum. They were deeply flawed, but for the first time in years, Arizona was undeniably dangerous, setting the stage for a rapid desert ascent.
