Season Review
Arizona Cardinals 2015
The 2015 Arizona Cardinals season stands as the absolute high-water mark of the Bruce Arians era, a thrilling ride fueled by an explosive offense, an opportunistic defense, and a roster built for a championship. Coming off a resilient 2014 campaign that was derailed by quarterback injuries, expectations were sky-high in the desert. General manager Steve Keim aggressively bolstered the roster in the offseason, signing Pro Bowl guard Mike Iupati alongside veteran defenders Cory Redding, Corey Peters, and LaMarr Woodley, while also solidifying the interior line with A.Q. Shipley. The front office nailed the draft as well, adding tackle D.J. Humphries, pass rusher Markus Golden, and a dynamic weapon named David Johnson. The result was a historic 13-3 regular season record, securing the franchise's first NFC West division title since 2009 and a first-round playoff bye. For most of the year, this juggernaut looked like the undisputed team to beat in the NFL.
Offensively, the Cardinals were a terrifying, vertical-passing machine that lit up scoreboard after scoreboard. A healthy Carson Palmer played at an MVP-caliber level, dismantling opposing secondaries for 4,671 passing yards, a spectacular 35 touchdowns against just 11 interceptions, and a stellar 104.6 passer rating. Under Arians' aggressive 'no risk-it, no biscuit' philosophy, the Cardinals led the entire NFL in total offense with 6,533 yards and finished second in scoring with 489 points (30.6 ppg). The aerial assault featured a legendary three-headed monster: John Brown exploded for 1,003 yards, the timeless Larry Fitzgerald caught a team-high 109 passes for 1,215 yards and 9 scores, and Michael Floyd chipped in 849 yards. On the ground, rookie sensation David Johnson eventually took over from Chris Johnson (CJ2K) in the the backfield, accumulating 581 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns while proving to be an equally dangerous threat out of the backfield with 457 receiving yards.
Defensively, James Bettcher’s unit complemented the high-octane offense perfectly, ranking 5th in total yards allowed and 7th in points allowed by giving up just 313 points (19.6 ppg) all season. The secondary was a certified 'No Fly Zone,' powered by Tyrann Mathieu’s spectacular All-Pro campaign and Patrick Peterson’s lockdown coverage on the perimeter. The unit specialized in creating chaos, forcing an impressive 33 total takeaways, including 19 interceptions and 14 fumble recoveries. Up front, the pass rush generated 36.0 total sacks, led by Dwight Freeney's team-high 8.0 sacks and immediate contributions from rookie Markus Golden, who logged 4.0 sacks. Linebacker Deone Bucannon anchored the linebacking group with a team-leading 112 total tackles, while Calais Campbell remained a disruptive, immovable force along the interior line to completely neutralize opposing run games.
The regular season was a masterclass in dominance, highlighted by a franchise-record nine-game winning streak that consolidated their status as Super Bowl favorites. The turning point of the season came during a crucial mid-November stretch when Arizona secured a thrilling 39-32 road victory over their division rival, the Seattle Seahawks, followed by a gritty 34-31 Sunday Night Football win against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Cardinals simply refused to lose during this stretch, systematically destroying opponents while putting up 30 or more points in nine separate games throughout the season. Even a puzzling 36-6 blowout loss to the Seahawks in a meaningless Week 17 finale could not dampen the momentum or the confidence of a locker room that felt destined to lift seriously challenge for the Lombardi Trophy.
The postseason brought theater, beginning with a legendary 26-20 overtime victory against the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round, a game immortalized by Larry Fitzgerald’s heroic 75-yard catch-and-run on the first play of extra time. Unfortunately, the dream season met a brutal, unceremonious end the following week in the NFC Championship Game, where a cascade of seven turnovers led to a 49-15 blowout loss to the Carolina Panthers. Despite the heartbreaking exit, the 2015 Cardinals established a profound legacy as the most statistically dominant team in franchise history. Bruce Arians’ squad set club records for wins, points, and total yards, leaving an indelible mark as one of the most entertaining and explosive football teams of the era.
