Season Review
Arizona Cardinals 2014
The 2014 Arizona Cardinals season was a captivating NFL drama packed with elite defense, unexpected resilience, and absolute heartbreak. Entering the season under second-year head coach Bruce Arians, the Cardinals were desperate to break out of a brutal NFC West that featured the defending champion Seattle Seahawks and a strong 49ers team. Arizona made major splashes in free agency, signing defensive back Antonio Cromartie, offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, and return specialist Ted Ginn Jr. to solidify a veteran roster. Arians also injected young talent by drafting hybrid safety Deone Bucannon and wideout John Brown. The moves initially paid off beautifully as Arizona fought their way to an impressive 11-5 regular season record. Despite their brilliant start, injuries caught up to them down the stretch, forcing them to settle for second place in the division. While they ultimately clinched a wild-card playoff berth, the feeling around the team shifted from Super Bowl contender to a squad simply trying to survive.
Offensively, the Cardinals operated a deep-passing attack under Bruce Arians that was efficient but heavily disrupted by constant changes under center throughout the year. Carson Palmer was spectacular when healthy, putting up 1,626 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and a 6-0 record as a starter. When Palmer suffered a season-ending ACL tear, Drew Stanton stepped in to throw for 1,711 yards and 7 touchdowns across 8 starts before he too went down. The dynamic ground game leaned on Andre Ellington, who racked up a team-high 660 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. Out wide, Arizona showcased a balanced receiving corps where Michael Floyd led the team with 841 receiving yards, while franchise icon Larry Fitzgerald caught 63 passes for 784 yards. Rookie John Brown also made an immediate splash with 696 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns. Despite the quarterback instability, the passing game still generated 3,808 yards, though the offensive unit ranked 24th in both total yards and points scored at an average of 19.4 per game.
While the offense shuffled through quarterbacks, Todd Bowles’ suffocating defense anchored the entire team. Arizona boasted the NFL’s 5th-ranked scoring defense, giving up a stingy 299 total points (18.7 ppg) all year. The defensive unit was built on a punishing solid run defense and a lockdown secondary that thrived on takeaways, hauling in 18 interceptions. Cornerback Antonio Cromartie breathed new life into the defensive backfield alongside a breakout rookie campaign from Deone Bucannon. Up front, defensive standouts like Calais Campbell provided a relentless pass rush, while Alex Okafor led the team with 8.0 sacks. Linebacker Larry Foote added veteran leadership, racking up 83 total tackles to keep the front seven disciplined. This defense specialized in bend-but-don’t-break football, consistently forcing field goals and bailing out a limited offense to keep Arizona at the top of the conference standings.
The regular season was a thrilling rollercoaster highlighted by massive victories and crucial turning points. Arizona started the year white-hot, jumping out to a 9-1 record with statement wins over the San Diego Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and a 28-17 dismantling of the Dallas Cowboys. The absolute apex of their season came during a six-game winning streak that was capped off by a gritty 14-6 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 11. However, the turning point arrived when Carson Palmer went down, triggering a late-season collapse where the team lost four of their final six games. A brutal 35-6 home blowout against division rival Seattle in Week 16 officially stripped them of the NFC West crown and forced them into a tough path for the postseason.
The wheels finally fell off in the Wild Card round as Arizona suffered a 27-16 postseason loss to the Carolina Panthers. Forced to start third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley, the crippled Cardinals offense gained a historically low 78 total yards, making an advancement impossible. Despite the ugly exit Bruce Arians won the NFL Coach of the Year award for his masterful job guiding a battered locker room to 11 victories. This team proved they had the roster when healthy to compete foe a Super Bowl, leaving fans to forever wonder how history would look if Carson Palmer had stayed healthy.
