Season Review
Arizona Cardinals 2009
Fresh off their magical, unexpected run to Super Bowl XLIII, the 2009 Arizona Cardinals entered the season with an unfamiliar burden: real expectations. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt sought to reinforce the roster for another championship push, executing key free-agent acquisitions by signing cornerback Bryant McFadden to boost the secondary alongside depth pieces like running back Jason Wright, fullback Dan Kreider, and tight end Anthony Becht. The veteran-heavy team handled the pressure beautifully, cruising to a 10-6 record to capture their second consecutive NFC West division title. Proving that the previous year was no fluke, Arizona established themselves as a legitimate perennial power in the conference, securing back-to-back postseason appearances for the first time since the 1970s.
Offensively, the Cardinals remained a lethal, high-octane machine that finished 11th in the league in scoring with 375 points (23.4 ppg) and 12th in passing yards. At 38 years old, quarterback Kurt Warner was as sharp as ever, completing 66.1% of his passes for 3,753 yards and 26 touchdowns over 15 starts. Warner fed a spectacular receiving tandem; Larry Fitzgerald earned Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro honors by hauling in 97 receptions for 1,092 yards and a league-leading 13 touchdowns, while Anquan Boldin added 84 catches for 1,024 yards. Steve Breaston contributed an additional 712 yards to the aerial assault. Crucially, the offense discovered a ground game behind a physical tandem: dynamic starter Tim Hightower generated 1,026 total yards from scrimmage with 8 touchdowns, while explosive rookie first-round draft pick Beanie Wells rushed for a team-high 793 yards and 7 scores, giving Arizona a dependable ground game even though passing was their route of choice.
Arizona’s defense made respectable strides under the radar, finishing 14th in points allowed by surrendering 325 points (20.3 ppg) and ranking 10th in forced turnovers with 29. The unit was anchored by an opportunistic secondary that ranked 7th in the NFL with 21 interceptions, creating short fields for the offense. While McFadden integrated quickly into the defensive backfield alongside young safety Rashad Johnson, the run defense - which finished 17th in yards allowed - was often tested and held its own. Pro Bowl caliber leaders like safety Adrian Wilson and linebacker Karlos Dansby consistently delivered impact plays, ensuring that the defense could protect narrow advantages whenever the explosive offense hit a temporary lull.
The regular season was a story of excellent resilience and dominant road stretches punctuated by bizarre letdowns. The turning point arrived in mid October when the Cardinals went on a tear, winning six of seven games highlighted by a gritty 24-17 primetime victory over the New York Giants and a commanding 41-21 blowout of the Chicago Bears. Arizona showed elite championship DNA by going a spectacular 6-2 on the road over the course of the season, including a critical 30-17 home statement win over the heavyweight Minnesota Vikings in December. However, consistency issues lingered, evidenced by an embarrassing seven-turnover meltdown in a 24-9 loss to rival San Francisco on Monday Night Football and a flat 33-7 defeat to Green Bay in the regular-season finale.
In the postseason, the Cardinals etched their names into NFL lore during the Wild Card round, outlasting the Green Bay Packers 51-45 in an iconic, highest-scoring playoff game in league history that ended on an overtime walk-off fumble return. Though their season ended brutally the following week in a 45-14 Divisional round defeat to the eventual champion New Orleans Saints, the legacy of the 2009 squad remains immense. Fitzgerald’s stellar individual achievements cemented his status as an elite receiver, and the campaign marked the final chapter of Kurt Warner’s legendary, Hall of Fame career. By validating their prior Super Bowl run with a double-digit win season, this group fundamentally redefined the modern expectation of Arizona Cardinals football.
