Season Review
Buffalo Bills 2016
The 2016 Buffalo Bills season embodied the chaotic twilight of the Rex Ryan era, finishing with a 7-9-0 record and a third-place finish in the AFC East. Expectations demanded a playoff push, prompting the front office to sign free agents like linebacker Zach Brown, center Fernando Velasco, and defensive back Colt Anderson. Instead, the franchise remained trapped in its agonizing postseason drought. After stumbling to a 7-8-0 mark, ownership fired Ryan, elevating Anthony Lynn for a Week 17 finale that ended in a 30-10 defeat to the New York Jets. It was a year defined by fleeting momentum and inevitable collapse, maintaining the grueling status quo of Western New York football.
Buffalo featured a lethal ground attack, finishing tenth in scoring with 399 points - averaging 24.9 ppg - while claiming the league crown in both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Tyrod Taylor anchored this group, throwing for 3,023 yards and 17 touchdowns while scrambling for 580 yards and six scores. The true engine was tailback LeSean McCoy, who carved up defenses for 1,267 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns to earn a Pro Bowl nod. Because Sammy Watkins missed significant time, Robert Woods served as the primary target with 613 receiving yards, forcing the Bills to rely mostly on the ground game with Mike Gillislee’s chipping in 577 rushing yards rather than their thirtieth-ranked passing attack.
Defensively, the unit was a paradox of individual brilliance masked by collective mediocrity, settling at sixteenth in points allowed giving up 23.6 ppg. Zach Brown proved to be an absolute steal, racking up 149 tackles and four sacks to secure Second-Team All-Pro honors. He was joined by veteran edge rusher Lorenzo Alexander, who experienced a late-career renaissance with 12.5 sacks and an All-Pro second team nod of his own. The secondary featured flashes of dominance, highlighted by Stephon Gilmore snagging five interceptions, while Kyle Williams provided relentless interior pressure with five sacks. Yet, despite this Pro Bowl talent, the unit routinely faltered in clutch situations, surrendering 378 total points on the year.
The season was a rollercoaster of false hope, highlighted by a four-game winning streak that temporarily erased an 0-2 start. Shutting out the New England Patriots 16-0 in Week 4 served as the apex of the year, momentarily convincing the fanbase that a cultural shift was underway. The fatal blow arrived on Christmas Eve in a Week 16 overtime thriller against the Miami Dolphins. Surrendering 589 total yards in a 34-31 loss officially eliminated Buffalo from playoff contention. Missing the postseason again cemented 2016 as another frustrating chapter. Firing Ryan before Week 17 signaled a desperate need for a fundamental reboot, closing the book on an era of loud promises and empty results.
