Season Review
Buffalo Bills 2014
The 2014 Buffalo Bills season was, in many ways, the ultimate 'what could have been' campaign for a franchise desperate to escape the shadow of the AFC East basement. Finishing 9-7, the team posted its best record since 2004, yet still managed to fall just short of the postseason. It was a bizarre, emotional year for Buffalo; the legendary owner Ralph Wilson passed away, and the franchise was eventually sold to Terry Pegula, bringing a new sense of stability to the front office. On the field, head coach Doug Marrone steered a squad that was far more competitive than the 2013 version, even if the lack of elite offensive firepower prevented them from making a true leap.
Offensively, the season was defined by a mid-stream shift at quarterback. After starting the year with EJ Manuel, the team turned to the steady, unflashy Kyle Orton, who provided just enough stability to keep the offense afloat. Orton finished with 3,018 yards and 18 touchdowns, leaning heavily on rookie wideout Sammy Watkins, who lived up to the hype with 982 receiving yards. While veteran workhorse Fred Jackson continued to be the heart and soul of the backfield—chipping in 525 rushing yards and 501 receiving yards - the offense was largely functional rather than explosive, ranking 18th in points scored averaging 21.4 ppg.
If the offense was a mixed bag, the defense was the undisputed alpha unit of the team. This was a legitimately terrifying unit, finishing 4th in the league in both points allowed (18.1 ppg) and total yards. With an aggressive front that generated consistent pressure, the Bills were a headache for every OC and QB they faced, holding opponents to just 16 touchdowns through the air all season. Anchored by stalwarts like Mario Williams and Marcell Dareus, this defense kept the Bills in games they had no business winning, creating the identity of a team that would fight you for every inch of grass.
The season had several ‘must-watch’ moments that kept the playoff dream alive well into December. The team’s ability to grind out wins - like their gritty 21-13 victory over the Green Bay Packers in Week 15 - showed a level of toughness that had been absent for years. However, the inability to close out critical games against divisional rivals and a few head-scratching losses in the middle of the season meant they were always playing catch-up in the playoff hunt. It was the classic agonizing script for Buffalo: showing signs of turning the corner, only to run out of time.
Ultimately, the 2014 season will be remembered as a bridge between eras. They missed the playoffs, but a 9-7 record proved that the foundation was finally starting to set. While they lacked a superstar quarterback to put them over the top, the team succeeded in shedding the label of a total pushover. They walked away from the season with a winning record and a blueprint for a defense-first identity, leaving fans with a lingering, familiar question: if they had just one more win or one less mistake, would they have finally ended the drought?
